You should try some of the smaller joints. There's a place on Carson and Pine street called La Gardeña. Food is good and inexpensive.

I had a nice dinner at La Fonda not all that long ago. It's ambient, a bit overpriced, and although it would not be a first or second choice, I would go there again..

Default local mexican restaurants

I've been in SA since 1992. These are the places I take my family and friends when they are visiting:
El Chaparral in Helotes and Viola Ventanas near Sea World.

I get a kick out of Viola's Ventanas' name: literally (minus the apostrophe), it means "You rape windows"

On a side note, even Mi Tierra's bar is not that good. It's hard to screw up a michelada or a shot of tequila... but to prove my point, just ask for a mojito and they will find a way to screw it up. I was handed a very sugary concoction with some dry, tasteless leaves that either looked like pot or old cilantro.

I felt bad for the waitress on that day because she was trying to do her work and everything I ordered was just so bad.

For fajita's I like Ajuúa. The poblano sauce is great.

Not to hjack the thread too much but is there any actual Mexican in SA? I'm getting tired of tex-mex I'd settle for a restaurant that uses white cheese and doesn't use chili powder or cumin. Or does anyone have a go to place to get a good chiles en nogada?

SoLuna and La Fonda are pretty pricey but food is still very good. They are more upper scale tex mex. La Fonda has great outdoor dining in like a courtyard setting covered by trees and other nice greenery. Mi Tierra is like the touristy place to go and is more what you think of good ol' fashioned Tex Mex. They also have a bakery in there selling mexican sweet bread. These are all just based on my experiences there as I have been to those places numerous times. You looking to try places on the list?

Many of those mentioned are good restaurants. Worst one you can try is Mamacita's on IH 10.
Has a beautiful interior but it's still as fake as the food. Do yourselves a favor and whenever you come across a restaurant that is bad or good, be sure to 'Yelp!' It.

You might want to check out Palenque Grill, between Stone Oak and Blanco Rd,across from Trader Joe's. Overpriced but better quality, than most Tex-Mex places.

Have wondered about Ajuua, but not in that area very often, may have to make it a point to try it out.

Good idea ugotme10.

Acenar (downtown 1 block away from the Majestic) had very good chiles en nogada, but IDK if they're still making them because they change their menu. Despite that, it's still one of my favorite restaurants.

IIRC Picante Grill on Broadway also makes chiles en nogada...

Anyone remember when NBA star David Robinson was looking forward to moving to San Antonio for the Mexican food?
