It gives the illusion of doing something, without really affecting anything.

Sort of like the Dodd-Frank financial "reform" bill?

Unfortunately, Dodd-Frank doesn't "do nothing." From what I've read, Dodd-Frank has made it difficult for small banks to survive. Politicians should have to take a Hippocratic Oath to first do no harm. That would stop most of the legislation. They should limit their activities to naming post offices and bridges and running for reelection.

I was just joking about it in the sense that much of what politicians do is designed just for show, or to appear that they are "doing something."

You are right, and I wrote about how bad Dodd-Frank is in this post May 18th:

Banning those size drinks doesn't stop anyone from getting multiple refills if they wanted to. Either way, its not the Governments job to know what's best for the people. Their job is to protect the rights of the people so therefore the people can make their own damn choices for their own damn lives.

Default in a nutshell (no not wtf's brain)

its the difference between liberalism and freedom

freedom says you are free to do as you wish, you are both free and responsible for your actions, with a safety net to take care of those unable to do so

liberalism says we need to take care of all the little people, for we are smart and caring and also know everything. and besides everyone on our plantation is too stupid to take care of themselves. and besides it gives us such power and feeds our ego for all the idiot little fly over people have no clue, as long as we can have total access to the responsible people's money. all of which only feeds more irresponsibility and sloth and destructive behaviors which then causes the liberal to think there is a need for the imposition of ever more restrictive laws to cure the increased irresponsibilty. All of which insures the safety net set up can no longer pay for the increased amount of helpless people, which then causes the liberal to dream up even more restrictive laws to try to cure the health problems and pathologies of all the charges under their care. it never ends until it crashes and burns
