I was going to say an invasion by extraterrestrials might make us come together to fight a common enemy. But, I'm not sure even that would be enough. Fifty years ago, back in Cold War 1963, everyone was asking the same question. "The Outer Limits" broadcast an episode called, "The Architects of Fear," in which a group of altruistic scientists get together, pick the short straw for one of their number, stick him in a lab and painfully "turn" him into an alien, then toss him out to the global "lynch mob," idea being that the world will unite against a common enemy from outside. As I pointed out, you would think that a terrorist attack would have the same effect (at least in this country) but we can see what happened. Some people think it was done by the government, some came out the next day and said we have to understand the terrorists point of view, some blamed US for policies that aggravated the terrorists, and a year later even people who voted for military intervention (Hillary, Edwards, Kerry, et al) were calling Bush a war criminal. We failed that test and we failed it because of the political left. When the right complains of a war (Clinton, Obama, Carter) it is because of the strategy and not the politics.
