Yeah right, you forget Hollywood Henderson. If the media of today were back in the 70s and 80's I guarantee it would be the same animal, with no changes in stripes and dots.

the Cowboys had "too tall" Jones, Lance Rentzel, Rafael Septien, Duane Thomas, Bob Hayes.. plenty of troubled players under Landry.. later Nate Newton, Larry Allen.. I remember one night, in the 90's, when 2 Cowboys crashed their cars in seperate, drunken accidents, mere blocks from each other, and about 15 minutes apart.. one Cowboy walked away, leaving his car behind.. he only "got away" because the Cops were tending to the other wreck..

Wasn't the other one Erik Williams, who barely got out alive?

When you look back, that whole sordid episode still makes you shake your head, doesn't it? Though Williams healed from his injuries and eventually regained his starting position on the O-line, ol' "mean and nasty" was really never the same afterwards; you could just tell he'd lost a step from his prior self.....and many experts will tell you even today that Erik was well on his way to having a career that would land him in the Hall of Fame.

And though their personal circumstances were very different from one another, it was a bit akin to the Roy Tarpley story....potential greatness that never was fully realized. Both could have achieved so much more had they not gotten distracted with off-court / field "activities".

I learned from the mistakes my older brother made. My father was intercollegiate boxing champion from Arkansas when it was part of the Southwest Conference. He went to Texas and was a bar fighter before that was banned.
My father used to put his change on the dresser and hang up his pants. My brother wasn't smart enough to just take some of the money, he took it all. The second time, I thought he was going to kill him. I remember my mother was hysterical. He had punched him numerous times and had him on his back slapping him across the face. He said, "I'd rather kill him than raise a thief". Was this child abuse? Obviously, by today's standards.
I can tell you that he never stole anything, from anyone again. The truth is that my father rarely whipped either of us but he made an impression on us each time. I went to Catholic schools and was never whipped in school. It wasn't that I was afraid of the Priests ...I was afraid of my father. He used a belt and you would have marks for a week.
I spanked my daughters ....rarely. I never had to. I just gave them the look and they straightened up. The key is consistency. Children are happier when the understand their boundaries. I've heard parents say it doesn't work on their children. My father used to say, "I'm going to whip you until I get tired, rest, then whip you some more. That is what he did. Trust me, it made an impression on you. Act up in public and get a warning. The next time you are told, when I get you home, you are getting a whipping. It could be four hours later but as soon as you get home, "go to your room, I owe you something". He normally would wait 30 to 45 minutes but he always came through.

Ah yes, "the look".

My kids know it well. A good hard look is better than any belt or "switch". You just have to be attentive and ready to give it the second they screw up (because they WILL look at you when they are or about to do wrong). It's all about timing and delivery.

Two stellar academic schools ... Most football and basketball players are coddled through life without ever having to worry about grades. I will always remember one big tu football player that spent a summer working for a beer distributor. When I asked what he is taking at tu he merely said "football." When I asked what his major was, the answer came back "football." He was the dumbest human I have ever met. Yeah Darrell Royal ran a clean program ...

The academics are there but with all the early outs for the pros why should they study?

Feature on NPR this evening had a professor from UT who was a researcher on corporal punishment. 75% of Americans still whip their kids. Some regional and racial deviations above and below that average. Southerners are more likely to whip kids as are African Americans.

My guess is Peterson gets next to no punishment in a plea deal, or is acquitted if it's tried. Defense will be that he, unknowingly, whipped the kid too hard. But that he was justified in his choice to use corporal punishment. Jury in Montgomery County will have no problem with that, I predict. Only thing not in his favor is the lack of African-American jurors in that county. But he's got one of, if not THE, very best criminal defense lawyers in Texas. Majority of folks here whip their kids. Very tough case for the prosecution. Maybe it shouldn't be, but it is.

A question that hasn't been raised: Which one of his 5 children he's fathered received this punishment?

The four year old in Texas obviously. But hey, child abuse is the perfect opportunity to crack a stale joke. So lame.

He may have six kids, but he takes care of them. Are you being judgmental on an escort board because he has sex with multiple women? What?! You guys are all about sexual morality now? LOL. Get the fuck outta here with that. It was just a chance to dump on someone you hate.

I would not call OU stellar, it figures you would, since you call UT "TU"..

he's fathered 7, one was murdered last year.. so one of 6 surviving, at least 5 baby mamas.. Son-of-a-Bitch is guilty of a lot, even before doing a Ray Rice with a tree limb on his own child..

There is a Catholic School outside of New Orleans called St Stanislaus. It is available to young men from 7th to 12th grades. They only take young thugs and turn them into citizens. The more convictions you have the more likely you will be accepted. The Priests walk around with canes and look for a reason to use one on you. No school matriculates more troubled students into college than this institution.
