Air traffic controllers shutdown the central hub of air travel last week in Jacksonville, FL. They did not show up for work. Going on strike would be illegal but a lot of people can get sick at the same time. It happens! So they got sick and shut down the building and forced flights to be rerouted from Miami to New Orleans. Nearly half of all air traffic controllers have yet to be vaccinated and the deadline is just before the holiday travel period when they will be fired. This is so reminiscent of the Nazi era. Within weeks of taking power, the National Socialist German Worker's Party purged government offices of anyone who was Jewish, a communist, or outwardly opposed the new governments goals. Shortly thereafter they purged the universities and primary schools of the same. Then the hospitals and sports franchises. Very public and very important to a nation but the message was simple; submit to Hitler or go off and die.
This isn't about the vaccine, this is about this tyrannical mandate. If you are a supporter of the mandate then you are on the wrong side of history and freedom.
There have been some lies about the past perpetrated as well. The polio vaccine was never mandated when it was first invented. It was strongly encouraged, very strongly encouraged but never mandated. The measles vaccine...never mandated until decades later when they had volumes of data to work with. The civilian population of the United States has NEVER been subject to a mandate of this sort.

I'm with eccieuser on this one. Gary Kelly, CEO with Southwest, was on CNBC this morning. The vaccine mandate as it applies to Southwest employees had nothing to do with the situation. Rather, it was set off by bad weather in Florida. Southwest, which operates a lot of flights out of Florida and has a point to point system instead of hub and spoke, wasn't able to move aircraft, pilots and flight attendants around like they should have, and that set off a chain reaction with cancelled and delayed flights system wide. Southwest employees aren't required to be vaccinated until December 8, which is the deadline for companies with federal contracts.

So how about air traffic controllers (ATC's)? Well, if you believe the chief operating officer of the Jacksonville Aviation Authority, the vaccine mandate might have indirectly had a role. He wrote that more controllers than usual were out because of scheduled leave, and because some were taking 24 to 48 hours off after receiving the vaccine. They're required to do this, presumably because they need to be on top of their game while they're working. See the letter here,

The vaccine mandate for federal employees doesn't take effect until November 22. I don't think the temporary shortage of ATC's resulted from some kind of a walkout because people didn't want to get the vaccine. If it did, then Biden should do what Reagan did. Fire their worthless asses. Putting the safety of the American public at stake should not be taken lightly. The ATC's work in rooms crowded together. We don't need COVID running through the lot of them and putting some out of commission for a while. And the vaccine will reduce the probability that will happen.

And yeah, Biden's mandate for the private sector sounds like something a Democratic politician would do -- make government more powerful and more intrusive. But then Abbott turns around and kind of does the same thing, in reverse, by mandating that companies cannot require vaccines if an employee makes up some lie about why he's not getting vaccinated. Like his church believes the COVID vaccine is the work of Satan.

Companies have to pay for medical insurance. The federal government has to pay for Medicare. If a person doesn't have a good reason for refusing the vaccine, like a medical condition or a previous infection, then the company should have the right to fire him. Or maybe if an unvaccinated person gets infected and ends up in the hospital unconscious with a breathing tube rammed down his throat because of COVID, then Medicare or his company insurance shouldn't pay for it. He can pay out of pocket instead.

We've had lots of vaccine mandates for schoolchildren through the years. And seat belt laws, drunk driving laws, laws against spitting on the sidewalk, etc., etc. All this is not an assault on the American way. It's not some kind of start of a totalitarian government. Eccieuser's arguments about Jim Crow laws and Trump's Big Lie are much stronger than the line of reasoning about the COVID vaccine mandate.

We're arguing over the definition of "prevent" Oeb. Getting the vaccine does not mean there's 0% probability of coming down with COVID. Maybe your chances of getting it are reduced by 40% six months after receiving the Pfizer vaccine. And by a lot more two months after or if you got the Moderna vaccine. Obviously if you don't get the disease, you're not going to transmit it.

We do both agree the vaccines are much more effective at preventing hospitalization and severe disease than in preventing infection. And so they reduce the cost burden on private insurance and Medicare. And on those of us who directly or indirectly pay for the insurance and Medicare, in the form of higher prices for goods, lower wages, and higher taxes.
