It is impossible to make a circle (rug) w/o overlapping the ties. The standard spread of a tie will not allow you make a circle w/o either overlap or gaps unless you vary the taper. Figure out what diameter circle you want, then figure out the circumference (3.14 X diameter). Now take this number and divide it by the average width of the ties at the wide end. That will tell you how many ties you will need to make the circle. You will have to alter the length and width as you go toward the center. Hope this helps.
If I totally misunderstood your question, sorry.
You sew too? Impressive!

I think we are saying the same thing. I assumed she would use the full length of the ties and therefore the diameter would be twice the length of one tie. That gives the 101 number I quoted. You are correct, though, that the real problem is that ties are not a uniform or regular shape. The only way to know for sure is trial and error plus some judgment on the overlap. Anyway, since Dannie offered 300 ties that should be plenty for her to experiment with until she gets what she wants.

Must not have had my math hat on. All I got out of it was "length doesn't matter as long as it's wide enough". Age old question solved.

You mean you missed this part?
"First one to answer gets a WHOO HOO... a free session."

Now that I think about it, she said "first one to answer" not "first one with the correct answer."
