It is called sodium alginate and is the sodium salt of alginic acid. Its form as a gum, when extracted from the cell walls of brown algae. It can be purchased at good health stores or bought on line. One of its most common uses is in the food industry in making salad dressing, ketchup, etc and is an emulsifier that has no taste.
There are a few recipes for lubricant that use that and it is considered to be the best for homemade water-based lubricants. Pure gelatin is also good. Corn starch just happens to be a poor mans lube.
