I know the area pretty well, so haven't used Vegas.com for hotel reviews. Outside of LVS, I usually get hotel reviews from expedia.com or travelocity.com. Attractive Vegas hotel/air packages can be found there too.
At the Flamingo Rd./Las Vegas Blvd. corner that I mentioned, the Bellagio rules as far a upscale goes. Others can be good or bad (rooms), depending on luck, or willingness to upgrade. Most of the better resorts are in a constant state of slow renovation, so refreshed rooms can be found even in older ones such as the Flamingo, depending on crowd. I haven't been in a while, but have heard the economy has strongly impacted the tourism there this past year, so it may be a buyer's market. Weekends are by far the hardest to get what you want, and the prices go up accordingly. I'm willing to pay up though, because there is no where that I've been that provides the visual stimulation - everything from extreme eye candy to the truly bizarre - as a Friday or Saturday night on the Strip. It must be seen to be believed.
I'm fiscally conservative at home. But something grabs hold of me as soon as I deplane at LVS. Right up until the cab ride back to the airport I cannot spend money fast enough. It's a good thing I stay away most of the time.
Trust me - you'll have fun. And even if you find that after you leave you don't ever want to go back, you'll never forget the trip.
