John Wayne, Panache? His talent lies in acting the same way in all his movies.

Over the weekend, I read that Jeff Bridges mentioned how he had gone back and read the original book the movie was based on and so he wanted to keep more in line with the original character and not simply follow in the footsteps of Wayne's movie protrayal.

Given that I have not read the book myself, I will probably go ahead and watch it with that in mind and not look for differences thinking why did he do that when Wayne did this but instead look at it fresh.

Probably hitting a theater this week to see how it looks.

I've had several friends fill me in with their thoughts on this one. No details because it's one I definitely want to see soon. Not one has expressed displeasure but it's about equally divided as to which was the favorite. I'll take that as a two thumbs up.

It has gotten very good reviews.
Based on that and also that the Coens are involved I will be going to this one.

Will never watch this movie. The original is one of the best; I see this in the same light as remaking Casablanca or Citizen Kane. It should never have been done.

Best way to stay in the dark is never to turn on the light.

I saw the movie over the weekend. I thought it was good, with good performances by Bridges and Damon... but I thought Hailee Steinfeld stole the show.

Default Why? Why not!

For a number of years I have not liked most of the remake versions(2nd or 3rd, maybe 4th for one) of movies from the past. Its like they don't think we remember that stuff.

We should probably keep in mind that with all the millions of people that have lived over the years that original ideas are becoming a rare thing. Especially with technology to spread those rare ideas around. Its harder to say you came up with something original when you didn't. Or even if you did its even rarer that you don't have it ripped off.

+1.

Taking a proven winner and performing it again with a new cast a generation later is a safe bet for success.

nobody upstages John Wayne, He was my idol as a kid and still idolize him today. it probably is a great movie, I like the cast and coen bros stuff. But i would sit there the whole time thinking bad thoughts about hollywoods lack of ability to come up with a good western on it's own without having to steal from actor fame gone by.
I watch independant films and some european flix...Most of hollywood is lost in corporate america and has let go of the "art" of film making there are some gems bit are harder to find these days

Remakes are the product of a lack of imagination!

It was pretty darn good. I never saw the first one... guess I need to! Damon is one of my favorites, but they were all great in this movie.

In my opinion the remake is a better film.

Actually, and not to be a smart ass about it, you're sortof right.

Willa Cather said that there were only three stories in the world. The rest are variations on those three.

It makes sense to me! (I just need to know what three but there are a few guesses out there!)

Elisabeth

P.S. I got the original "True Grit" for a family member for Christmas. And I am STILL waiting to see the remake. I can hardly wait!!!
