I have had GE front loaders for 4 years now. They work great as far as I can tell, but I do always use the HE soap. Only issue I have found is I have to drain my washer, it has a hose on the front bottom under a pop out door. If I don't do this it gets a mildew smell if the door is left closed for too long.

Make sure its got the "HE" on it. If still leaving residue try a second. rinse option or if it has a fabric softner option always select that. The standard rinse is only a spray rinse to save water. The fabric softner option does a soak rinse.
