I had a friend in high school who was white. He applied for a scholarship to go to college for an engineering program. He was one of the finalists for that scholarship but lost out to a black student who he became friends with. He found out that he was more qualified on all measurable, tangible factors; grades, SAT scores etc. Apparently the college engaged in racial discrimination — the decision to award the scholarship was based on race, not qualifications.
