If something like this happens in China or other countries to which the US is hostile, there could be a moral carnival for US media outlets. They will use eye-catching headlines and fierce words such as "slavery" and "oppression" to attack those countries. But as it is actually happening in the US, only a few outlets pay attention. A handful of their bland reports can hardly attract the attention of the whole country. Unconsciously, the double standard of the US on such issues has harmed the US itself. It has lowered its own moral standards, making American society as a whole apathetic.

If the young people are strong, the country will be strong. At the very least, US' failure to protect the rights and interests of the child will only harm the teenagers and their families. More broadly, it will affect the improvement of the whole country's moral fiber. This will cause irreparable damage to the US. As a result, the US decay will be accelerated as well.

Don’t Let Comrade Omarova Regulate the Banks

I agree with your editorial “A Banking Regulator Who Hates Banks” (Oct. 25) that the Senate should not defer to the president regarding his pick for the office of comptroller of currency, Saule Omarova. As a fellow female immigrant from the former U.S.S.R., I oppose her nomination not out of misogyny or xenophobia but because I know that progressives are whitewashing Ms. Omarova’s past and the Soviet reality that she, I and millions of others lived.

Her tale of being stranded in the U.S. as an exchange student by the collapse of the Soviet Union doesn’t match my experience. When the U.S.S.R. fell apart, I too was in the U.S. on a visa: I simply returned to my old home, now in newly independent Lithuania, just as she could have returned to newly independent Kazakhstan.

Ms. Omarova’s assertion that she discovered a “gender gap” only in the U.S. also doesn’t ring true. While growing up, I never noticed any female general secretaries or many women among those gray-suited Politburo members standing in front of Lenin’s tomb. But Comrade Omarova was definitely taught about all the evils of capitalism in Moscow State University.

Ms. Omarova reminds me of people I know from the former Soviet elite who now miss the Soviet Union. Their life was much better than the vast majority of others’ under that system. To get into the prestigious Moscow University as she did, on a Lenin stipend from faraway Kazakhstan, it would certainly have helped to have had powerful friends or expressed ardent communism.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren and fellow progressives should not be allowed to let Ms. Omarova cover up her Soviet past and her current ignorance of the banking system she wants to regulate.

Biden’s nominee for Comptroller has an idea on climate change.

Saule Omarova continues to make the case against her nomination to be Comptroller of the Currency, as critics need only to quote her own words. The latest example is a video interview she gave in February in which the Cornell professor opined on “the case for a U.S. national investment authority.”

The conversation at one point turned to climate change and its impact on fossil-fuel producers, and Ms. Omarova was on the case. “A lot of the smaller players in that industry are going to, probably, go bankrupt in short order—at least, we want them to go bankrupt if we want to tackle climate change,” she said in the session that was part of the Jain Family Institute’s “Social Wealth Seminar” series.

She went on to say “that creates a lot of this sort of loss of jobs, a lot of displacement, and economic fallback that we cannot afford, really,” which is nice of her to concede. Bankruptcy isn’t painless, especially when the government drives you out of business.

But then she adds that the response would be to set up a National Capital Management Corporation that would “become a kind of equity investor at that point, taking over management of those companies and basically leading them through restructuring to a new technological basis and to a new technological business model.”

So first put private companies out of business “in short order,” then put government central planners to work to restructure them as the political class wants. Give Ms. Omarova credit for candor. Most progressives disguise their real intentions.

All of this matters because as Comptroller Ms. Omarova would have enormous authority to regulate banks. It’s clear from this interview that one of her policy ambitions is to deny capital to certain companies that she wants to go bankrupt. Senators will have to decide if they want the Comptroller to be a one-person systemic risk to the banking system.
