Social Security was the camel's nose under the tent. Today the camel is almost completely in the tent.

Every single one of you Rush Limbaugh-lovin' maroons ought to have to explain precisely what you mean when you say something is "unconstitutional" because the reality of it is that you're just parroting what you hear the conservative entertainment industry repeat about everything they don't like that the government does day after day after day. It's amusing, they use the word (without any idea what it means legally) in reference to almost everything they disagree with because they think it lends weight to the argument. When, in reality....as here, it is utterly meaningless.
Samuelson has been running this same column with the same lies in it for years. The idea that Robert Samuelson, or any of you repukes, thinking you have any idea what FDR might have been thinking or planning when it comes to social security is laughable.
This is just more nonsense from the conservabot loonie greedhead capitalists trying to roll back a program that they think takes money out of their pockets while providing a much-needed social safety net for the poor, the sick and the elderly. You should all be ashamed of yourselves.
Love those on here asserting how they will take care of themselves and never need social security or any sort of assistance. Maybe. Maybe not. When that uninsured drunk driver hits you while you're driving home from work and leaves you paralyzed from the waist down, you might be depending on social security benefits to eat and Medicaid/Medicare for your doctor's bills. Whatever savings you may have, or your mom and dad may have, will get eaten up during one week....one week....in your local hospital ICU. It's about $10,000 a day. And what if that drunk driver kills you? Think the two minor children you left behind without a father could use some assistance from SS?
Social security isn't welfare....it isn't taking money from one group and giving it to another. It's a means of insuring against economic risk. It's like fire or flood or auto insurance.....takes money from people in order to spread the risk. Some will get more than they paid in, others less. Some will pay in their whole working lives and then die a year after becoming eligible to receive it. Some young people will pay in for decades and die before they ever get a nickel.
But, the potential benefits and protections are there for all who paid in and there are millions of Americans who have, and do, and will, depend on it to survive. Getting rid of it is a short-sighted benefit for the rich (what a surprise) who will never need that safety net it provides.
What is wrong with you people? Smarten up and stop letting the repukes run their games on you when you're their intended victim. They laugh at you behind your back and think you the fool. They've convinced you that they're doing you a favor when in reality, they are stabbing you in the back for their benefit. Wake up.

Pretty much. But being 38 I figure by the time I am retirement age it will be wasted away and gone anyway.

The problem is not that SS exists but rather how it is funded and that congress has access to the funds. Until that changes there will be problems and the transition will screw a lot of people. If there is no transition then even more people will end up screwed.

Unless you can sight where in the Constitution the federal government has the authority to provide a monthly stipend for old people, it is unconstitutional. The tenth amendment says that the federal government only has the authority to do those things that are specifically stated in the Constitution. Everything else is up to the states.
The federal government has grown far beyond the intentions of the founders largely by interpreting the interstate commerce clause more broadly than was intended. The socialist/Democrats are currently trying to get Obamacare through SCOTUS by hoping they will hold their noses one more time and allow socialized medicine based on the interstate commerce clause.
Even the people that designed and implemented Social Security under FDR knew it was unconstitutional (see attached link to CNS News).
Social Securty isn't humane or compassionate. If people were allowed to put the money taken from them against their will into a private pension fund they would be far better off. County government employees in Galveston, Matagorda and Brazoria county in Texas were allowed to opt out of Social Security back in 1981. They are retiring with twice the monthly income from their private pension fund than they would have gotten from Social Security. Social Security is a ripoff and it's going bankrupt.

Joe, thanks for bringing up Galveston. It should serve as a model for the rest of us.
And Timmy, please provide the section of the Constitution which supports the establishment of the Social Security system. That would be interesting. Some of the rest of us apparently missed it. You'd be doing us a great service if you could point that section out. Thank you in advance for you assistance.

I doubt that you ever met your father. Most black men are never really fathers in the true sense of the word. They impregnate multiple women and don't stay around to raise their own children. They rely on the government to provide for their children. Blacks are a race of parasites.

I bet FDR didnt see the government using the ss fund to finance their special interest bullshit.
Had he been able to do that, and lockbox the fund, this convo wouldnt be on the table.
