My opinion as a moderator is this. There is not a problem with the word Negro. I do not believe it depends on who is saying it or who it is being said to. The context is important. A member stated that since the phone was stolen, it must have been a Negro who did it. So, in my opinion, that is a stereotypical generalization of a racial group. There is nothing wrong with the use of the word Negro. There is something wrong with calling out an entire racial group.
Sure, it was meant as a joke. Haha. Is there one member of that racial group who was offended by the statement? They never will speak up on the board, but there was. And if there was, then the poster made a racial stereotypical slur. It does not matter if the statement was made by a member of that racial group.
During a series of PM's about this today with a member, I was asked if I had any African American blood. And I told him that I do not. And I believe that allows me to be better suited to seeing a problem with it. If even I see a problem, there very well may be one.

^ Reading this kinda / sorta of reminds me of the situation that transpired in the Dolphins locker room. One guy thought it was ok to use slurs towards his younger teammate / protege because he allegedly had the blessing of other members of that ethnic group to use it. The younger teammate obviously grew up in a biracial atmosphere and was not ok with it.
Good catch

Outside of the board I'd agree with you but in the context of trying to moderate a site I agree with P because there's an idiom that states: "Give an inch they'll take a mile".

When speaking to divers members its best to avoid putting yourself in this scenario in the first place. I mean there are tons of other jokes you can bust out with.
Oh and DeD is more of a country kind of guy.....wrangler jeans and cowboy hat. JaD on the other hand is straight up hood type....baggy jeans, snap backs and tattoo's.

Just to be clear DED, you are saying that if a black guy makes a comment, that I perceive as a racial slur, then it is alright because he is black? I should ignore it?
I have actually met very few guys on the board. Most of them I would have no idea if they were black or not. Most members would have even less an idea of the posters than I. So, do we let all comments fly in case the poster might be black? Or do we penalize in case the poster is not black.
I think consistency is the best way,
Of course, we can always agree to disagree.

I could be wrong, but you couldn't possibly be talking about the word "Negro", which is what this thread is about...that you hear some much in rap music and movies
Then again, I wasn't referring to the word "Negro" myself in the quote below...again, my bad OP

No, what I'm saying is I don't perceive the word "Negro" to be a racial slur.
So, no matter when it's posted or who post it, I don't take it as a racial slur

I agree Pistolero, I have no favorite mod, and I'm not a favorite as you yourself give out points like crazy, but you are fair. A very by the book guy!
If you buy a box of crayons in Mexico one of the colors listed is negro. In itself it's not derogatory, as a piece of paper is white. But the way it was said was ugly!

We agree to agree on at least some of this then. On the poll above, I voted no. I agree the word is not a racial slur.

Kinda like how the word "whore" is not derogatory on this site .......but words like bitch, slut, cunt, twat, etc ....is different depending on the context that it's used in....

I have no dog in this fight but I like giving my 2 cents ;-)
Two quick points here.
1.) Thread appears to be a smoke screen or spawn from a different thread and conversation in Co-Ed.Depending on what glasses you're accustomed to wearing, in the Co-Ed discussion it's clear (and in context) the word Negro was meant as a general insult and / or an acceptable substitute to it's more popular sister deviation.
2.) Many seemingly innocent words if used in the right context can be used as a slur. You cannot ignore context it's all important especially in this discussion. The OP may have been joking but the context made it derogatory for some. One can take the word Caucasian and use it in similar fashion depending on the conversation.
