Remember the ice skating rink in New York City. The City was incapable of getting it done, so Mayor Ed Koch brought in Donald Trump. Trump got it done in record time, a few months I think, for way less than what the city would have paid.

So why didn't he do something similar with this? Something like the Manhattan Project, marshaling the federal government's resources to develop extensive testing and a vaccine faster? Identify the people with the virus and isolate them? Those were no brainers. It would have been nice if they'd started working on getting masks and ventilators too, which became obvious as time passed. This would cost in the tens of billions of dollars, compared to the hundreds of billions the government will spend now, and the trillions in damage to the economy. It was obvious what we needed to do by the end of January, and Trump's advisers were shouting it out to him as loud as they could. Trump however, is unequipped, by his nature, to take this on. He doesn't have a proper appreciation for science, research and analysis. He has a short attention span. Perhaps part of it was pursuit of his self interest, spouting a line that he thought would help the stock market and the economy and his chances for re-election early on by minimizing the perception of the danger from this.

However, it's not fair to blame this all on President Trump, by a long shot. Yes, there were the extreme partisan politics and the impeachment, which made it more difficult for him and others in the White House to concentrate on what mattered. More importantly, the CDC and the FDA are rule bound and bureaucratic. They delayed testing while the CDC was insisting on coming up with its own test kits, and the FDA was a little slow authorizing state governments, hospitals and private companies to develop their own tests. I don't think they've done much to trace contacts of people with the virus and isolate them, like what South Korea and China did.

That is, the primary culprit at the federal level isn't Donald Trump, it's the deep state. Trump could have done much more, however, if he'd been engaged, like he was with the ice skating rink, to overcome bureaucratic inertia.

Thank goodness for the governors, mayors, hospitals, and the people and institutions behind them at the state and local level. Many of these people got it. This whole episode is another indication of how worthless the federal government is compared to everyone else.

Trump's taking this seriously now. He has an opportunity, which is slipping away, for people to view this more like a war instead of an economic crisis. When we're at war, people re-elect the president. When the economy is bad, they don't.

But by his very nature, he hasn't been able to take advantage of the opportunity. I was watching the press conference on CNBC on Friday, so could see what the Dow was doing while Trump was talking. In recent days Trump has said things that would lead you to believe he's taking this seriously and and watching what's coming out of his mouth. This was reflected in a more buoyant stock market. On Friday that fell apart. He said things that would indicate he doesn't know what's going on and that he's still trying to instill false confidence. You could see the market dropping while he was talking. He should just turn this over to Mike Pence and let him run with it and keep his mouth shut or at least filter what comes out of it better. That would be better for the nation, and for his re-election chances.

All governments are characterized by inertia - and the POTUS is like the captain of a large vessel - no matter what One does with the wheel - the ship only turns so fast.

Local governments can respond better to local issues - if motivated. many are now.

Trump has been reasonably responsive -IMHO - fighting through the Fascist DPST's resistance and criticism. See post #8 in this thread.

Russia's not getting hit hard by this, at least yet, even though it has a 2600 mile border with China. One of the main reasons is they shut off travel to China, Iran and South Korea early on. They didn't do that with Europe, and majority of the cases in Russia originated in Italy.

More importantly I think, the Russians were testing and isolating people much more aggressively than we were.

We'll get through this OK if we pursue the Russia/Chinese/South Korean/Japanese model, by identifying and isolating people and communities. Otherwise we'll follow Italy and Iran. We're only 8 days behind Italy right now in terms of the total number of cases, although thankfully we've got 5X the population and 32 times the land area.

The LSM is whole hog into reporting China with "No new cases", and Russia with few.

If One believes their reports - from authoritarian governments which can use Orwellian methods to control their citizens - and care less if a portion die from government action/inaction.

Do China and Russia have the testing kits to test adequately - ??? we know many more people are infected and asymptomatic/minimally symptomatic - a large proportion v those severely ill who do get tested. . Hw accurate are China nd russia testing kits - and how available in very large land mass countries with large areas with very primitive medical care.



I do not believe the russian and Chinese news releases - they have "face" to maintain - and China is doing its' best to blame America for the virus - they claim the american military brought the virus to Wuhan - an blantant attempt to avoid their responsibility. They are not trustworthy. I think it not unlikely that many citizens - particularly in china - who test positive - are treated with 7.62 therapy - which reduces the reportable cases.

Lots of reasons to distrust China and Russia - and Putin is in the middle of a flagrant takeover of Russia - he is becoming Tsar for life. Same as Xi= two megalomaniacs who will never step down - and only end their tenure in death.



Can we do much different - politically No - IMHO - and trump has been reasonably forward responding in this matter.

There is real question whether we truly have the data to justify our response of shutting down the economy. See Dr. Ioaniddis article from Stanford in a thread on this forum. This bug acts like Influenza A - which may well have a higher mortality rate. Difference is we have some treatment for Influenza A - and none yet for Wuhan virus. vaccine - minimum of a year - perhaps!


Treatments - chlorquine - a malarial medication - may have some action in lab studies. It has a very toxic profile - double the usual daily dose for malaria - 1gm per day - may be fatal in adults. Lots of complication potential. At least the research medical establsihment is motivated and looking into the virus energetically . Perhaps we will come up with something soon.

Best we can hope for - imho- is the summer months cause a spontaneous regression of the disease. given the behavior of other common cold corona viruses - a good possibility.
