President Obama was sworn in on January 20, 2009 with just 58 Senators to support his agenda.
He should have had 59, but Republicans contested Al Franken's election in Minnesota and he didn't get seated for seven months.
The President's cause was helped in April when Pennsylvania's Republican Senator Arlen Specter switched parties.
That gave the President 59 votes -- still a vote shy of the super majority.
But one month later, Democratic Senator Byrd of West Virginia was hospitalized and was basically out of commission.
So while the President's number on paper was 59 Senators -- he was really working with just 58 Senators.
Then in July, Minnesota Senator Al Franken was finally sworn in, giving President Obama the magic 60 -- but only in theory, because Senator Byrd was still out.
In August, Senator Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts died and the number went back down to 59 again until Paul Kirk temporarily filled Kennedy's seat in September.
Any pretense of a supermajority ended on February 4, 2010 when Republican Scott Brown was sworn into the seat Senator Kennedy once held,

I never said that the there was a super majority so why bring it up CJ. Obama didn't need a super majority if he had come up with something that was agreeable to moderates but he didn't. He tried to make deals that fell apart, he tried bribery but lost a couple of takers, then he just flat out lied to a couple of moderate democratic senators about abortion and he got em. I never said he had a supermajority and he never really needed on if he had moderated his positions.

As for poor old Doove. Once again he made my point again. He said that Obama never tried to pass any of that stuff the first two years which was exactly my point Doove. Why didn't he try to pass any of that the first two years? Can you answer that? All he had to do was propose a moderate answer to immigration and it would have passed on a bipartisan basis. He could have come up with a proposal to fix social security and it would have passed if it had been acceptable to the middle. You should be very mad that he did none of that. He wasted such an opportunity to advance an agenda but he just pissed it away and you're blaming republicans?

I said the same thing about Bill Clinton on foreign policy. We were the only superpower in the world. We could have done anything. Nudged a couple of nations to make peace or browbeat a couple of terrorist nations to disarm. He didn't do anything and, worst, he didn't even try.

As for the filibuster, I don't count the threat the same thing as a filibuster. Those were threats and used the cloture rule. Now the way to break a filibuster is to force the filibuster. Reid and Obama never forced the issue, they backed down. Which should tell anyone who plays poker that they didn't have the votes to pass the measures. So they didn't have all the democrats on board.

Or are you going to claim that the two independents (Sanders, Lieberman) don't really count as reliable Democratic votes? They have two of the most liberal voting records in Congress.

Bernie Sanders is a border line communist. He was a supporter of Obamacare from the start. The same thing with Lieberman. The only reason Lieberman left the Democratic party and became an independent was over the war in Iraq. On social issues and entitlements, he is just to the left of Barney Frank.

So, yeah, the Democrats had 60 reliable votes - a veto proof majority if and when they needed it.

So, back to my original question. After Obamacare got passed, what was the other great initiative that the Democrats and/or Obama had that they couldn't get passed because of 40 Republicans? Can you name one?

I also refer you to the post immediately above mine where MunchMaster listed a whole bunch of bills that got passed in Obama's first 2 years. Pretty long list and it includes some controversial bills that the GOP opposed.

So much for the myth of the invincible GOP filibuster.
