I really enjoy this series so far. Looks like after the crazy jealous lover shit Marty pulled on his hot girlfriend, we may not be seeing too much of her anymore....oh well.
I really like Rusty's musings as well. He is out there, but there is some truth in what he says.

I like the shows' premise but don't understand the why of this show, what story or moral they trying to portray, seems like the first episodes are going to be the best ones but hoping I'm wrong

The AA cops have asked Harrelson's character a couple time about how Mcconaughey's character handled the investigation, tried to steer it away from the task force, etc. It almost seems like they are trying to pin the new murders on him. The big surprise will be when it turns out to be woody harrelson's character.

Oh and those were some of the nicest tatas ever on TV.

Default Uncomfortable to watch with wife!

So, did any of you other mongers watch with your SO this week when Marty's wife was grilling him about if there was another woman? Made me a bit uncomfortable and I was trying to keep my poker face so I didn't portray the darkness of my own soul.

This line sounded rather poetic.

...black as the smoke from a thousand burning tires.

I'm amazed, thankful really, at the quality of serials on cable. Homeland, True Detective, Game of Thrones, House of Cards (Netflix) and a new one I'm looking forward to, Black Sails.
Not to mention the edgy bits of Walking Dead. You can almost smell the decomp.

I agree. I went for years as an anti-television snob. I didn't watch television, except a little bit here and there, for decades.

Now, it's such excellent entertainment. I also see low brow stuff on there all of the time but often, that's fun to watch as well!

Anyone else think Harrelson and McConaughey were switch type-cast on purpose for this series? Site unseen, if you were to ask me who would have played each character I would have said the opposite. Just adds to the brilliance of the whole story. I'm in love with it!

I have wondered if Marty turns out to be the killer too...but I just seems too obvious. Idk. There are 5 more episodes. Can anyone tell me what happened with that old case of the little girl's disappearance from the first episode? The one where no one reported her missing bc they figured the dad had taken off with her? What happened with that??? I missed something.

I think they stepped away from the little girl's disappearance for now because they didn't have any other leads to follow up on since that happened so long ago. They do consider her to be a victim because of the "devil's nest" that was found in one of the sheds she used to play in, but they decided to pursue the warmer trail of the initial victim that was found in the 1st episode.
They may return to her.

thn...I think that's part of the brilliance of casting these two actors in this show..either of them could have played either role..damn good stuff. i'm already wondering if the series will be extended into multiple seasons.

Yes. Harrelson and McConaughey are not coming back. From what I read, the idea is to make is a mini series every season with different perspectives.

As far as the switch casting ..I wondered whose idea was it. The writer, director or woody and matthew. In any case...it is an interesting switch and imho...McConaughey pulls it off better than Woody.

That is correct. There have been a number of interviews with the show's creator and in some of them he mentions this. It's an interesting idea, almost like 'American Horror Story' where they keep changing locations and characters every season (though in some cases, actors stay on but they play different roles). Some of the ideas laid out sounded very interesting.

Back to the casting aspect, I think it just adds to the dichotomy of the two characters, and how they seem to want what the other has. In some ways, they're like two sides of the same coin.

Spoilers ahead for anyone who hasn't seen Ep. 3:

For instance, in Ep. 3 you see Hart (Harrelson) get upset with Cohle (McConaughey) for mowing his lawn and sitting in with his family. It's one of many things in the episode that remind Hart he's an absent husband and father, and he's always making up excuses about why that is (that scene with the basketball game and his daughter just really made me shake my head -- his character just gets more and more pathetic every episode in my eyes). However, here is this outsider, Cohle, who knows who he is, what he wants and simply lives life on his own terms, answering to no one. Hart desperately wants that, but he can't have it; he has too many responsibilities and an image to uphold. Even in the present day interview he still preaches "family" and "commitment", he can't seem to take off his mask even after he's lost his wife (missing wedding band).

Then there's Cohle. He tries to appear aloof and uncaring, dismissing his daughter's death as an act of mercy (anyone catch the bit where a drunken Hart ran over the pink bicycle at his mistresses place? Kinda creepy), yet here he is loitering at another man's home, spending time with the wife and kids while Hart is away. Cohle has his life and his mind in such a twisted state that a relationship of that type is just not in the cards anymore (note the date he went on later in the episode and how he handled the phone conversation with Maggie when she prodded him to make a move on her friend; he asked to be setup with someone, but rejects the offer when it is offered to him on a plate). Even if he denies it with his words, his actions show that he still wants a family. He wants what Hart has, but his mental state and world view won't allow him to have it any longer. It's like peeking behind the curtain of the Great Wizard of Oz; once you've done so, your view of the world can never go back to what it was.

There are a lot of other examples of this in the show if you look for them, there are a lot of layers to the characters. I like that it isn't just Yet Another Police Procedural; frankly, I don't care who the real killer is at the end of the ride, I'm enjoying the journey.
