I have heard reports that the schrapnel was BBs, ball bearings and nails, apparently in glass jars. The force went out low, which is why most caught it in the legs (except for children whose height made it head to toe).

They are now also stating they believe both bombs were built into pressure cookers (but not packed tightly). There are also various comments that pressure cookers have been used as containers for bombs in other locations in the U.S. as well as Afghanistan.
