That's because Kansas and Missouri are behind the curve. It might be happening sooner then we think.

I agree with getting rid of the blue lights from phones, clocks, VCRs (what are those things?), DVD players and computers.

I disagree with melatonin unless you like vivid dreams that may leave you more tired than when you went to sleep.

You're definitely right about the dreams! I've had some real doozies with melatonin but I've never had issues sleeping

I use my phone, and just play this, as you are laying in bed, alone.

There are alos changes in things like dopamine and serotonin that affect sleep.

Lowered carb diets are often the most problematic, b/c they both lower serotonin and tend to get people a bit jacked up.

Saving some carbs for bedtime can be helpful to get to bed

other things to consider are

zinc/magnesium (25 mg/400 mg)
melatonin (300 mcg)
5-htp works for some people (not sure of dose, I think 100-150mg but someone should correct me if I'm wrong)
taurine works for some people (6-9 grams)

stuff like that. Don't try them all at once.

Nyquil works for me, the original on for cough, the one they make for sleep doesn't work.
Tequila works also.

A sure way For me to fall a sleep is to try to watch the movie -Man on a wire- I attempted 5 times to finish that movie have not made it once . I,am counting sheep 15 minutes into it every time.

To be physically exhausted is the only sure bet . Mid Afternoon walk are run helps .

try if possible to invert your day . What ever your doing in the morning do at night and so forth .

One thing that always worked for me...back several years ago I bought a copy of Jesus Christ Superstar, the sound track. I had a big old pair of head phones and it starts out kind of buzzing. It took me about four months to actually get past the opening without immediately falling asleep.

Melatonin doesn't do squat for me when I have insomnia, which is once or twice a week. My doctor put me on a small dose of xanax. It's kinda like alcohol but with no hangover.

I fear I empathize closely with your problem. Sleeping pills are an option but in the long run they become their own problem. Prescription sleeping meds are inclined to harm memory and many even cause weight gain. I found trazadone worked great at the beginning. Temazpam if your problem is you cant stop thinking to fall asleep. Benadryl is used to help wean people off sleeping pills.

Non prescription options are....
Hypnosis
Cognitive sleep behavior therapy. (Remove entertainment from your bedroom. Use your bed for sex and sleep ONLY. Remove any clock that ticks from your bedroom. Minimize lights and sounds. acquire a sleep mask. Be very active during the day outside the bedroom. Get plenty of sunlight. If you do not fall asleep within 20 minutes of laying down get up and go do something outside of the bedroom. Set an alarm and always get up at that time no matter what.)
Learn to meditate and consider yoga. (sleep specialists recommendation)
acupuncture.
Remove any and all caffeine from your life in general OR stipulate an earlier cut off time. My doctor recommended 10am
Attain sleep CDs. Or any sound track that has the goal of meditation or relaxation. There was a past life regression soundtrack I used to sleep for awhile. I think it was the sound of the heartbeat in the background slowing down compounded with the distraction of the softer soothing music that made it work.
Some doctors recommend "white noise" have a fan running in your room.
If you smoke, do not smoke within 4 hours of sleep. Nicotine is a stimulant.
make a routine for bed.
Sleepy time tea. (I favor the lemon jasmine from celestial seasonings. Using honey instead of sugar to sweeten it helps as well)

Not sure if any of that will help but I will cross my fingers for you!

The first and most important step is to have an honest conversation with yourself about why you might be having the problem. Many, many things can cause sleep problems. Foods, emotions, physical issues, and more. Having that conversation by itself won't solve things, but will give you places to start. The "fix" depends a lot on the real cause(s).

Jaycee's list of things is a good one. A lot of times you can do what is done with allergy identification: remove everything you can think might be the cause (as far as you can) and see the changes. Keep a diary--don't trust just you memory. If removing all those things helps, then if you want you can add back one at a time (not too quickly) and note what does or does not change.

I hope you find the cause and can adjust it out of your life. Lack of sleep is not at all fun, nor is it healthy. Almost all the pills, etc., are only treating the symptom.
