If you like the way our government runs things just take a long hard look at the USPS system. When our postal systems was independently run it actually made money and the price of stamps stayed the same. Since the government took it back over it has lost money and we have seen a steady increase in the cost of postage stamps. YOU USE POSTAGE STAMPS? I remember a 3-cent first class stamp. Eisenhower was president. Since then, the cost of a first class stamp has risen steadily. Do you know how many people DON'T use stamps nowadays? In a study done in 2010 by First Advantage Bank, about 80% of ALL U.S. homes with internet access paid at least one bill online. I pay about 75% of my bills online. You suppose that with fewer users, the price of stamps might just go up? Strike 2!
If UPS and Fedex were required by Federal Law to have a FedEX Office and UPS store in almost every town in the US, as the USPS is, they would lose money. If UPS and Fedex were required by law to deliver to every house 6 days a week (not Cherry-picking the profitable ones), they wouldn't have a profit. If everytime UPS or Fedex talked about closing a store, every Congressman was hauling their butts to hearings to justify it, as they do with the USPS, they might operate differently. If UPS and Fedex couldn't close one of their stores because it only did a whopping $23 in business one day, they would have less profit margin.

The world changes and private companies adapt. The USPS does not. The sad truth is that the volume of mail decreasing because of the internet age actually limits the losses of the postal service. More mail volume would equate to higher losses. UPS and Fedex will continue to grow and be more profitable each and every year unless of course the government were to get involved in there operation.

I remember when some small business establishments got twice a day mail delivery.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if there was a planned parenthood in every town, PBS had 30 govt. funded channels, there was free medical care for all,.....on and on....... but when are you people going to understand that we can't afford all this. Very sobering economic numbers out today. Enjoy the O'bama inspired coming great economic depression.

Are you actually lumping PBS (actual budget about 420M - a fraction of one percent of the federal budget) and Planned Parenthood (a little more than twice that amount, but npt all of it comes from the fed budget and NO FEDERAL FUNDS used for abortion services) together with access to health care?

Just checking.

<shaking head> Wanna take a guess how much of our Federal Budget is devoted to Planned Parenthood?

.0001% !!!

That's right genius, ten thousandth of one percent. And guess what else? The PBS budget was far less than that. Attacking those two particular items is nothing but partisan politics supporting a right-wing agenda, nothing more. As for the "Obama-inspired great ecomomic depression", I guess you haven't been paying much attention. As of April, 2011 private employers have added 2 million jobs back to our economy and there has been 250k manufacturing jobs returned since Obama took office. As a reminder, those were -850k and -250k at the end of Bush's term. As of April 2011, Obama has only increased the deficit by 35%. Even that mostly accounts for stimulus and tax cuts. That's the lowest increase of any president since before Reagan took office. Lastly, CBO office estimates Obama's healthcare plan will reduce the deficit by $132 Billion over the next ten years.

So what exactly were you saying about the Obama depression bla..bla..bla again?

Whether it's a subsidy for Oil companies, agribusiness or anything else. They all need to be eliminated. The govt. needs to be out of the subsidy business, period. Only mentioned those two because I know they are so dear to flaming liberals like yourself.

I don't believe I have ever met a "flaming liberal." How high are the flames?

No, you only mentioned it cause you didn't know any better. Why don't you give us some figures on what percentage of our budget is oil and farm subsidies and then explain how *that* is going to help? I happen to agree that those need to be cut, but they are not going to help much. You want cut spending and actually make a difference? You'll need to cut defense, social security, or medicare. Fact is you could cut defense in half and still be outspending China three times over, but they will never do it.

Our real problem is revenue Billy. 48% of our deficit is Bush tax cuts! Why not start there? Eliminate corporate tax loopholes, bump them back up a few percentage points and start making them pay their fair share. Get our troops out of the middle east, and stop sending money to Egypt and Pakistan. Do this, and the deficit will take care of itself.

That was a vast amount of knowledge about feminine hygiene products. Thanks for letting me know why you act like a woman. So emotional. How are those mood swings working for you?

That is a typical liberal response that are revenue problem is the Bush tax cuts. You could put a 100% tax on the most wealthy Americans and it still will not help with our debt problem. I do think we need to eliminate loop holes and simplify the tax code. I am all for a fair tax and eliminating the IRS.

The Federal Government has too much power and needs to be reigned in. Power needs to be the highest at the local level then State and then the lowest amount of power is at the Federal level. The founders original design was for the power to be set up that way. I do agree that we need to cut some defense spending. Stop sending aid to other countries and start helping those in need right here in the good ole USA.

Once again you miss the obvious lesson. Your hormones give you tunnel vision.

While I know nothing about "napkins" other than I disliked picking them up for the ex, I was able to Google the subject. One link impressed you.

Links = knowledge

Since you have trouble differentiating men from women, what is your ratio of hooking up with Shims vs. women?

2 to 1?

3 to 1?

Let's see. To review what we've learned, this debate has pretty much turned into a battle between opposites, not just in ideology but in persuasive styles -- Facts versus flames. Information versus indignation. Research versus ridicule. Knowledge versus name-calling.

For the record, F-Sharp is becoming my new hero! Once again I applaud you for boiling the argument down to what's real and what's simply a hot button talking point.

How DO we raise revenue and provide the services that the citizens of our country should have -- public safety, education, health care, infrastructure, etc.

How much did you say those cruise missiles cost? More than one of those boxes of winged napkins I'll bet.

National Public Radio [NPR] is my major source of news and I think they're the best.

However I don't think the government should be funding broadcasting, regardless of how good it may be.

PBS needs to find another way of funding itself.

ps....

KUT is the WORST NPR channel anywhere in the US!!!

They only carry about 20% of the network feed, and ignore all the best programs NPR makes available.

Furthermore no UT student is allowed anywhere near it so it's not fullfilling any educational mission!

KUT's been hijacked by a group of old white men who pay themselves huge salaries to play disc jockey at everyone's expense because they could never find work anywhere else. They play horrible selections, mostly local artists who are soooo bad they can't make it in any form of commerical world. These four old white guys love to promote their personal favorite artists in a rather suspicious way.

All UT alums, particularly Communiciations College Grads, should contact the Administration and complain.

Haven't listened to KUT in a long time. When I was in school, it was entirely student run. I remember a couple of years ago, my kid hung out with a fellow student who had a show on UT, so I'm guessing things have changed.

Thanks for the heads up TAE.

Will check it out.

I don't know if it's the worst but it would have to rate near the bottom.

Correct on both statements. KVRX 91.7 is the student run station and has been for years. I don't know how KUT justifies the lack of student participation.

I agree with most of what TAE has to say about KUT although I'm not sure who the 4 old white guys are being referenced. The station certainly isn't being run by any of the djs. (Most of them, by the way, were let go from their previous jobs at KGSR in the past 2 years.) Around the time the economy began cratering in 2007, KUT brought in new management and from that point on it's been ALL about the money. That said, there is still good music programming. You just have to know when to listen. If you want to hear student-run radio, 91.7 is the place.
