They were processed under the law. That doesn't even mean they'll be permitted to stay.

The major problem is that A happens, and B happens but you neglect too look at anything else to skip straight to Z. And point to the extreme examples as representative or normalcy when they're not.

To chizzy's earlier point, one of the reasons asylum numbers lag is because it's not automatic. Those with criminal records aren't eligible. So that's the first way it gets weeded down. Additionally, a case can be for a family. Whether 2 or 12 members of the family, those can be adjudicated jointly. Which skews the numbers.

If asylum is granted, those folks each are granted asylum and eligible for permanent residency after a year. Now the rules on that year have become murkier thanks to beauracracy and overly complex wording, but it's often likely that the those awaiting this asylum case to flow all the way through court are in the U.S. for 5-6 years before they are approved. This is partially because of recent office closures and reductions of the number of immigration judges which helped inflate the backlog.

That means there are a lot more folks trying to apply legally than you think. And they apply at the border.

Do you have any idea how many folks apply for TPS or even what that is?
