Nook, Kindle or Other Type of Reader?

As someone who REALLY likes books these ireaders have always been something that I thought using just lost the purity of reading a real book.

But it's time, now. I want one.

A friend in Houston has the Sony reader and she just loves it to read the WSJ every morning and different newspapers. I don't know enough about any of them to make a very good choice.

It seems as if the latest Kindle edition is popular. Prices are going down.

Any thoughts?

My father bought a Sony reader for my mother last Christmas and I'm constantly having to go over there to fix the thing, I know a girl from work who had a Kindle and absolutely loved it until she bought an ipad.

What ever one you buy get one with wi-fi, it's a lot less of a pain in the ass to download it straight to the devise rather then sync it. That's the part my parents have the most problem with, then again every time my dad accidentally turns the subtitles on the TV it takes me 10 min. on the phone to explain how to turn it off.

I've had a Kindle DX for a year or so and really like it. I just use it for books and haven't tried magazines or newspapers. But I haven't tried the other varieties of readers (Sony, Nook, iPad, etc.) so I can't really compare them. Some of them, I think, may be backlit -- which is good for reading in the dark, but not so good for reading in direct light. That's one of the reasons I like the Kindle.

One of the biggest considerations may be: (a) what file formats they read; (b) how many (and what types of) titles are available in those formats; and (c) how easy they are to buy and load onto the reader. Direct download is a big plus over having to sync the reader with a computer.

There are nice things about reading an actual, physical book. You are giving up something. But there are several advantages for e-readers that, for me at least, outweigh the pleasures of a traditional book. Looking a word up in the dictionary, searches, annotations (highlight and notes), not to mention the ability to carry the equivalent of 20 or 30 pounds of books along on vacations or business trips. I have purchased a few e-books that I already had in physical/printed form, just for the convenience.

Now since I'm starting to do limited travel, and have some really big vacation dreams in the near future, it's just a drag to carry five books in the suitcase and then not be in the mood to read any of them when you're stuck for a few hours in the airport or in a hotel room.

And the weight of my carry-on is getting to be too much!

So that's why I'm interested in purchasing one.

Probably my MAIN desire is to have the option of getting any book that I want, which would include literary porn ... the nasty stuff. I know that amazon doesn't mind that and I'm just not sure how simplistic it is to get books with another system.

I wrote this same topic about a year ago. But I'm pretty sure by the end of the year, I'm going to have one. By one way or another! It's on my wish list, at least!!!

I've had my Kindle for about a year now. I love it and have been reading books exclusively on it since I bought it. I use it for reading books so I haven't done any magazine or newspaper subscriptions. I have one active book at a time and about two or three backups. When I sync my Kindle up and download books I turn the wireless off. That way I can keep a battery charge for about three or four weeks.

I have a Nook and I love it. I was able to compare the Sony ereader, the Kindle and the Nook and I like that there is no monthly fee (sony) and the Nook feels like a better quality product than the Kindle.

You can get the Nook with 3G (download anywhere there's a hotspot $199and 69.99 protection plan ) or just WiFi for a lower price ($149, $44.95 protection plan) and I do recommend you get the protection plan. It extends the manufacturers warranty to two years and covers all accidental damage. Even if you drop it in the pool.

You can side load PDF's so just get your porn in PDF format and you're good to go. I got mine so I can take my tech manuals to work without having 200 books there. Plus there's a search feature so I can look for specific terms (myofascial, ankylosis, throbbing), very handy.

What I'm waiting for is put out by Plastic Logic and it's called Que Pro Reader.

It's sexy, it has a full suite of Microsoft office programs and is a full ten and a half inches of touch screen that allows annotation. It will come with 3G or WiFi, like the Nook. My heart actually beats faster just looking at it.
