No, you never will be the same after surgery. However, depending on what the problem was to begin with, you may well be much better than you otherwise would have been. The first think you need to do is have you back examined by a competent MD, preferable an orthopedist, so that you can get a diagnosis of what it is that is causing the pain. You could have a muscle strain; a ligament or tendon strain strain; discogenic pain; a herniated disc; a disrupted disc; a problem with a facet joint; an impinged nerve root from foraminal stenosis, either acquired or congenital; SI joint pain with or without a tear of the lining of the joint; etc. There are literally a dozen or more common causes of back pain. Each should be treated differently. Many can be treated non-surgically, either by rest, medicine, injections, or therapy. Some cannot and need to be operated on. But to say what will or will not work without knowing what is wrong and causing the pain is a fool's errand.
