You are clueless what "stories, jokes, or other conversation" takes place among memebers at Augusta. And I bet the membership collectively does a hell of alof of fund raising for very worthy charitable organizations...probably more than you can imagine...and certainly more than any of the cheap demagogue democrats you support.. You know the ones; who talk a game but don't walk it...guys lilke Joe Biden,. et al. A guy who sucked at the tit of taxpayers his whole life, became a very wealthy man, is about as cheap as they come, and preaches how we don't give enough to the government coffers.

2) 2Dogs said that we don't understand the maning of "private", and in context he was arguing that bigotry doesn't happen or matter if it's in a private club. I was pointing out to him that bigotry van happen in public or in private. Nothing I said implied that bigotry was/did/will happen in any specific private club.

As to your comment about how much good the members of Augusta have done (or not done), I don't have an opinion. It's been a while since they let me see their fund raising books. But I will say: some fund raisers are bigoted, others are not. Your supposed justification of a group I haven't attacked is an illogical justification.

Or are you saying $ can buy you indulgences for past or future bigotry?

And no you can't buy indulgences; and likewise you shouldn't judge a man soley based on his membership in Augusta. Many of those men run companies and organizations that have very tolerant polcies of multiculturalism; many donate personal fortunes for the same or similar causes, many motivate less fortunate to go on and do better things with their lives...a membership at Augusta isn't the sum total of their lives.

OldT, you make an assumption of what goes on there unless you are a member and have the privilege of access to the by-laws of the organization.
They may be bigots there and there may not. "The difference is that you can only make supposition based on what you think rather than what is their private business.
This is precisely why it is a private club and not a public organization.

You see the thing is, I am not a member there and I will bet one large that you are not either.
In the world of privacy, your opinion does not count one hill of beans and the members really do not give a flying fuck what you or most people think.

My favorite private club is Cypress Point. When they started getting flak about their membership they simply decided to stop letting outsiders play there unless they were a guest of a member. This was back when they were in the rotation for the Crosby pro-am. As a result of people poking their noses into a private organization trying to bully their opinions upon them, the world no longer gets to see golf played on one of the finest courses ever. The worlds loss.

Sometimes it is better to leave sleeping dogs lay and accept that people have a right to their privacy whether as an individual or as a group..

Not quite true. Though I cannot make knowledgable assumptions about what I do not see, I CAN draw conclusions about what they say outside of their private rooms.

Numerous private clubs have had some spokesmen say some rather biased and dumb things at times. And those spokesmen do reflect on--rightly or wrongly--the broader membership.

I am sure a lot of private club members do good works. I am not against private clubs, belonging to a couple myself (though nothing as expensive as Augusta, and neither is a golf club). I just do not buy the assumption that "private" automaticly connotes "good".

You are right, I am not a member. Even if I could afford the membership, golf isn't my thing. I am quite sure they don't care what I think at all. Does my opinion "count"? Well, one could say that about all the posts on an annonimous board like this, including both yours and mine. Except that is the point of this entire board: people expressing opinions.

And when a "private club" brings in cameras and crowds they do lose some of that "right to privacy", at least for that week. It does seem privacy is more important to Cypress Point's members.

The Masters at Augusta National is a by invitation only golf tournament.
Each person can choose to not attend.
The people that attend the event are patrons and invited guests with no privileges other than what is stated on their ticket.
The media is limited not only in how and where they can do things but in what they can say and do.
This one week does not give anyone any rights to demand changes in how the club chooses to operate.
Sponsors can choose to participate or not and there will still be sponsors lined up to take their place because of the event in spite of pressure by some outside agency to withdraw.


Right or wrong, it is still the right of people to have privacy whether as an individual or in a group. The great thing is we have choices we can make about how we conduct our private lives and that it is nobody's business but their own.
