That's because Rush's "critics" use the tactic of taking his jokes out of context and pretending that he meant the remarks literally. They've done this repeatedly for years.
Rush once made an obvious joke about buying his mother a new can opener so she could open the cans of dog food she was forced to eat. The joke being, that he was so heartless that he would allow his own mother to live in dire poverty. It's Rush's way of poking fun at his critics that characterize him as some sort of right wing monster.
Democrat senator, Pat Schroeder quoted Rush's can opener joke on the floor of the Senate, as if he had not been joking.
