Went through a similar situation in 2006. CJ7 and TTH are correct about the contractors. You'll find some who are "willing to deal with you to crew the insurance company" to capture your business. It's best to pass on those guys and deal with an honest company. Check with the BBB for consumer complaints. BTW, you might have difficulty getting a contractor -- it's a sellers market after such wide spread damage. Your local contractors will be overwhelmed by the demand, and there will be scores of out of state contractors show up to compete for your business.
