since nobody will bother to click the link much less read enough of the artcle to understand the thread title, heres the cliff notes ..

Eight states tried to revamp insurance laws without a mandate in the 1990s.

"These reforms resulted in a rise in insurance premiums, a reduction of individual insurance enrollment and no significant decrease in the number of uninsured," said Karen Ignagni, the president and chief executive officer of America's Health Insurance Plans, the industry's trade association.

Independent studies have found that imposing new requirements without retaining the mandate could mean a dramatic rise in premiums. That could trigger an increase in the uninsured population, since fewer people are likely to buy coverage.

"You'd have fewer healthy people and more unhealthy people in the insurance pool," said Timothy Jost, a professor of law at Washington and Lee University. "Health insurance will become more expensive.

Anything about the chart reach out at ya, say starting about two years ago? Of course, we all know what a "right wing" paper the NYT is.

I said it in another thread, all the Congress and the President have to do to make this entire bill Constitutional is do away with that "penalty" crap and just say "we will tax you". Congress has that power.

Of course, since that moron bitch Nancy Pelosi is not in charge, that will not happen.

Oh, by the way. As a small business owner, (12 men in a manufacturing facility), I am all for National Health Care. Just not having to put up with the headaches invoved in my business having to furnish health care for my employs is worth the Government taking over.

My accountant and I crunched the numbers, and I will come out pretty good. I guess I can't complain too much about something that allows me to keep more of my gross.

Gee, higher insurance premiums, or the destruction of liberty. Freedom or slavery. I will choose freedom. We can always find ways to reduct premiums, but getting freedom back once it is taken is much harder.
