Default Any offbeat film buffs on here?

Seeing the movie previews on the Super Bowl reminded me of how few current American mainstream films interest me - yet I'll stop down for a 1973 blaxploitation movie in an instant. Anyone else like that?

Yes, Absolutely. There hasn't been any good offbeat films made in a while
that I am aware of. David Lynch, Quentin Tarantino and the Coen Brothers
need to get off their collective ass's and get to work.

If you are referring to independent films, yes, I am a big fan. With corporate Hollywood spewing that same type of storyline with big budget effects, it gets very dull. There are lots of great independent films, some with very notable actors. I could give you a list, but it would be very lengthy. The Angelica theater at the "shops of legacy" occasionally has a very good utr movie to watch. As a matter of fact, Paul giamatti was in a very good movie recently called "win win". Great character movie. I could go on and on...this could be a very interesting thread for those movie fans.

Another thing, don't forget about foreign films! Yes I know they are subtitled and it requires a little effort, however you are missing out on very good movies.

Have you seen Black Dynamite? It was made in 2010 and is awesome!

I was watching SLACKER the other day, the 1991 film by
Richard Linklater. What a great Inde film that was.
Shot in a kind of eavesdropping doc. style where
he seems to just fallow people around Austin and
film them.

Everyone in the film has their own dime store philosophy
about life. Some really great characters that he runs
across. I think my favorite was the conspiracy guy
and the Kennedy assassination guy. Great movie
if you haven't seen it.

The funniest one was the guy who's time was almost
up after a lady that passes by him has a premonition.

You can watch the complete film at

Wes Anderson and Alexander Payne are my two favorite directors working today. Paul Thomas Anderson tops them all, though!

I saw a very cool doc on Netflix instant streaming called NOT QUITE HOLLYWOOD, about the emergence of the Australian exploitation industry.

Check out the trailer:

And T-Can, BLACK DYNAMITE was a GREAT send-up of the blaxploitation genre!

Can someone please post a list of movies that are in the documentary about ozploitation mentioned above.

I wanted to see every movie they showed clips of in the trailer above. My kind of stuff.

Those women were HOT!

I wouldn't say I am an expert in this genre, in fact I didn't really know what anyone was talking about until I saw the trailer. But if you like the trailer from jkerouac, then you might like the movie "Pervert!". Mary Carrey (sp?) is in it. The trailer reminded me of that one. It is kinda corny, but I liked it. But if you didn't like the trailer above, you probably shouldn't watch "Pervert!".

I haven't seen it yet, but there is a docu about Filipino exploitation films named "Machete Maidens Unleashed!".

as for the ozploitation one of my favorite sub genres, below is a small list of my fave's....

Australia After Dark
Lady Stay Dead
Mad Max
The Road Warrior

Excellent, Mr Dark. I'm gonna dig into that list. Seen all the Mad Max stuff but not the horror films.

Is there a better rip-off of blaxpoitation than the opening scene of "Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood"?
"Not Quite Hollywood" has piqued my interest.
Remember "Thunderdome"? Did that film give you dreams of having Tina Turner CG, and just when you are blowing a load she splits your skulll with an axe?
Not even going to the Zombie movies at this point...

I liked THUNDERDOME but it was not worthy as a sequel to ROAD WARRIOR IMHO. Tina Turner looked hot though.

Watched BULLITT again the other night. Greatest car movies? I think mine us VANISHING POINT.
