Reminded me of my days in Los Angeles back in February of 1971 when the San Fernando quake struck. Centered in the San Fernando Valley it registered a 6.5 on the Richter scale. It struck at 6 AM and was quite the wake up call.

The aftershocks went on for several days.

Hey Mokoa, were you there? I'm a born and raised concrete jungle rat from the east side of LA. Moved to Texas about 6 months later in '71. That quake (I think was epicentered in Sylmar) was like someone jumping on your bed bouncing you up off the bed. You could hear it coming rumbling like a diesel truck engine braking. The Northridge quake in '94 was pretty good to.

I think they're doing a tad bit much work at the Eagle Ford shale place.

Hey, Mokoa -- I lived 9 months in the SF Valley. I remember New Year's Day, 1979: Gusty afternoon, and I was tinkering under the hood of my '68 Pontiac Catalina, parked at my in-laws in Granada Hills. Bent over the front end, stretching toward the firewall, I felt the Pontiac shudder against me.

"DAMN, that was a strong gust of wind!" I thought to myself. Moments later, my dippy sister-in-law ran out of the house, screaming that we were all going to die -- and only then did I realize I'd just experienced on of SoCal's earth tremors.

Pepper -- TFF!

Yes, I was there. Lived in Buena Park at the time. It was so loud you could not hear yourself scream. I remember the deafening noise, the shuddering ground followed by quite and a wave motion that felt like you were on a small boat in the water. There is simply nothing else like it.

You had a 1968 Pontiac Catalina?

I'm jealous!

A bit off-topic: Almost 2 months after the earthquake, left SoCal for my 1st career job at Bolling AFB, DC. On the OK Turnpike btw Tulsa & OK City, I see a semi slowly filling up my rear view mirror, I'm thinking, "C'mon, dammit, PASS me! Then...BLAM!

Sonofabitch apologized, admitting he'd dozed off at the wheel. The damage: A fist-size dent in my rear fender, just to the left (driver's side) of the trunk lid. A few curses and ugly glares, and I was on my way.

About a year later, in the Crystal City VA underground garage, I carelessly backed into a parked, brand-new Buick. Scratched my bumper. Crushed his fender like an aluminum can.

Damn, I miss that car -- built solid! Loved the little Indian head (in the shape of the neon sign below) that lit up red on the dash board whenever I hit the high beams:
