He's been in the hobby awhile so has learned some or the "tricks of the trade", keeping the lights off or very low, etc... Or maybe the wife's lack of interest is the reason he's in the hobby.
He's more concerned about her finding out that he didn't go to their general practitioner in the first place & is instead trying to resolve the problem stealthily.
