When I was growing up, the NE was solid Republican and the south was solid Democratic. Now the reverse is true. Have the voters changed that much? No. The ideology of the 2 parties have almost completely changed.
To compare the political landscape of the 1850s to the political landscape of today and say "the more things change" is ridiculous.
