Typically, yes. But that is largely because Mastering Engineers today will butcher analog recordings, with excessived compression, noise reduction, echo, and other ''tools'' they think improves the sound. Consumers appear to embrace it, look up Amazon reviews of some remastered Cd's.. You'll see comments like ''this version blows the old CD away! This one is louder, and the overall sound is crisp and clear''.
Of course what they are hearing is a recording, where the Engineer took a Digital Limiter and squashed the dynamic range, compressing the dynamic range into the middle, reducing the overall range, and making the sound louder. The average CD had a dynamic range of 12-13 in 1990, today it is around 6-7. You might as well be listening to a Jackhammer on a city street.
