You are correct. My mistake. The first impeachment did in fact go to "trial" although the Republican majority allowed no witnesses to be called to testify or documents to be entered. Hardly a "trial" in my opinion.

Same in the second impeachment. No witnesses were called and opted instead to admit into evidence written testimony from Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Wash. 57 Senators voted to convict.

The Democrats in the House did not allow the Republicans to call any witnesses during the impeachment process in the House. Not surprised that you don't mention this. In the first impeachment, 2 Democrats in the House voted against impeachment. And Tulsi Gabbard, another Democrat who was not a Trump fan, voted "present". She said she "could not in good conscience vote for impeachment because removal of a sitting president must not be the culmination of a partisan process". So you can't criticize what the Republican Senate did and not even acknowledge the very partisan process in the Democrat controlled House.
