I have an MBA from a less-than-stellar college. I found the academics to be rather easy but I know I was not attending Harvard or Stanford. I have no idea how difficult pursuing a PhD would have been. I don't know if courses are more difficult at the PhD level than the MBA level or if you just need more of the courses.

My profs recommended me for their PhD program when I finished my Masters. They were in a #30-35 rated program in the country. Part of it was your GPA, GMAT scores and recommendations. If you had two of the three you were golden at that level of school.
Its a factory type situation. They need inputs so they can produce outputs. They want a level of input available and to produce the best level out output to enhance their reputations. Failing a certain no. of students also helps their rep.
No inputs, no outputs, then no products. Factory goes out of business. Many of these degrees have little value. I heard too many stories about how little Janie received her Marketing degree with a 3.8 GPA and still can't find a job.
