It has become the duty of every baseball announcer, at least in the playoffs, to announce as many historical nuggets as they can. Joe Buck produced hundreds during the World Series.....it is not something he just comes up with....it is part of his announcer duty, just like reading ads. Tim McCarver used to have to do it.
They all go something like, "this is only the 2nd time since 1924 that 3 batters hit a ball next to the 3rd base foul line".
It is part of baseball tradition. But even the announcers mock them and are sick of them. Its like the english royal family. Something you can never get rid of.
