New Years Food Traditions
Happy New Years Eve, my friends! I've been busy in the kitchen getting my greens and peas going. On my menu today and tomorrow is collard greens, black eyed peas(loaded with sausage and salt pork)and skillet cornbread. :-)
So, let's hear it, what are your food musts for New Years?

Normally the required food items would be:
- Sassafras Tea,
- Hog Jowls,
- Black Eyed Peas
Surprisingly, I cannot find Sassafras Tea here in MS.
Breakfast on New Year's Day will include Jowl Bacon and Eggs, with Toast and a good cup of Coffee.
Supper on New Years Day will include a dish called Hoppin' John that includes the Black Eyed Peas.

Bio, I have seen sassafras tea in the health food stores here on the coast. May also check the tea section at Walmart. I think Rouses carries premade sassafras tea, but I will not swear on it.

Naughty, those peas sound awfully good & the cornbread too. Save me a bowl. I have to pass on the greens however. Can't stand those. I'm a country boy, but I don't like greens of any type.
Happy New Year!!!!!

That explains why I can't find it - Health Food Stores - Never been in one.
Local Walmart does not have it,and the Only Rouse's within 15 Miles has closed down.
Thanks for the Info

Biomed, what I make is basically Hoppin John. I flavor my peas with salt pork and Conecuh sausage, onions, garlic, bell pepper, etc and serve over rice, so delicious!

Add the silver
I was told to add 3 silver dollars to your festive black eye peas. If you get one in your bowl, it will be a lucky year for you.

I love conecuh sausage. I was turned onto that stuff about 10 years ago. That is pretty much all I eat now. We will also be eating some black eyed peas, cabbage, turnips greens, ham and hopefully some homemade jalapeno corn bread also. Hope everyone enjoys their first day of 2018.
