Visiting NYC August 7th thru 15th

I have been looking thru ECCIE, EROS and other affiliated type sites. I am wondering, for a visiting hobbyist, should I pour thru thousands of Indy ads or try an Agency, and what would the locals suggest or whom would be a "do not miss"?
