I would imagine that it had to do with food and/or shelter. Hey, I'll turn my rump towards you to mount if you feed me, first. Or afterwards.

I would suggest that in some ways, we are ALL prostitutes. We sell our physical bodies but even civie people sell their time, and other attributes, for different reasons.
It all has to do with creature comforts and being fed.
