But, it's a small price to pay over the alternative, imho.

Got a sweet Nokia lumia for $30 at best buy, just slide the SIM card in. Reload pay as you go minutes as needed.

There are apps now that look like one thing but actually hide private info. Such as the "Private Photo Calculator". So with some research, there has to be something where you can hide an app inside of another app.

For Android there are a few apps that let you hide or at least password protect access to other apps.

On iPhone though it doesn't allow apps to have that kind of influence on other apps unless you jailbreak it and get some locking apps from Cydia.

Regarding Google Voice though on iPhone you can simply log out and then all that is seen is the app itself nothing else. Bury the icon a few pages deep in some random folder of apps and it's a non issue. Even if a colleague or something were to find it, opening the app just prompts login.

No MMS is a pain sometimes but other than that I've been happy with it. If they ever fully integrate it with Hangouts I'm not sure how that will change it but they've been slow to do anything thus far.

The longer I can avoid having a third phone the better as far as I'm concerned, and I like being able to text from my computer/ipad easily as well.

Right. Veteran hobbyists usually separate the risk. Burners are the only way.

Look, it's very easy, I use text4free, you get a local number, you can log off, no one can text or call when not logged, and if I really want to play it safe, you can uninstall when at home. If you reinstall, it only takes like 10 seconds, while keeping the same number. But go ahead and buy a phone, and hope your ole lady doesn't use your car to get groceries and bam!

LMAO exactly!

I think it's probably 6 one way/half a dozen the other whether you want to use an app or buy a burner phone. Just decide on something and go do it. If it doesn't work for you, try the other.

This. I use the Google Voice app on my iPhone. It's not that hard to prevent an SO from seeing the app. When I'm going to set up an appointment to hobby, I download the app, log in, do whatever communicating I need to do, hobby, and then delete the app. SO never has any idea because it's not on my phone.

Even if you didn't want to download / delete, you can just log out of the app so you can't be contacted and then bury the app in some random ass folder on your phone.

As a regular of mine told me last week....as I won't mention any names (you know who you are)...LOL
He went off and left his hobby phone on the kitchen counter. Wife got home before he did. He almost shit hisself..haha. Reason I wouldn't have a second phone. But that's just me.

May be this is an idea for ECCIE. They can develop custom texting php app to facilitate this. These days all the carriers provide email to text features. You login to ECCIE and fillout a form, eccie server send an email to the provider phone. Text appear on provider phone. Provider does the same to text back. No trace as long as you delete texts received and eccie does not keep the logs. We added similar features for $70 on one of our ecommerce site. Customers can get text when their orders get shipped.

Only thing bad about that futile....is as I use the "Two-call system" and I'm sure most providers do as well. I won't even see and schedule a visit unless I'm given a phone number.
