Default Has anyone read "Buy the Hour"... and what are your thoughts on it?

In an attempt to open a broader discussion in the little used Denver Forum....

I recently read "Buy the Hour" by Alex Lieberman and found it to be a fascinating view of the hobby. Very clearly this was just one person's experience as a provider and she certainly has her share of hangups, but I was wondering what others thought of the read and her perspectives.

she spent a lot of time in the book talking about her bad experiences as a provider. Certainly that makes for more drama (and a better book) than talking about the good experiences, but good and bad is relative. Do you believe her experiences and perspectives are typical?

Looking forward to some discussion....

I have not read the book myself. When the subject of good vs bad comes up I have to agree with you the bad makes for far more to catch the readers attention. For myself if the good did not by far out shine the bad I would of moved on. I am by no means saying that the bad doesn't happen if I did I would be lying. Sadly it does happen and for me when it has I think of all of the amazing gentlemen I've had the pleasure of meeting.
I am going to look for the book and do some reading Vic you have sparked my interest.

I have not read the book either. However, I was intrigued and pulled the following from one of the many book sites online.

"I don’t go to the circus, I steer clear of my friends’ children’s birthday parties – hell, I won’t even wind up a jack-in-the box! I avoid these simple things all in the hopes of never coming into contact with a clown. But now I found myself in a hotel room with the door shut behind me, staring into a greasepaint nightmare with a hard-on. I had two choices. I could run for my life or I could stay, face my fears, and let Pennywise pound me foolishly...” Buy The Hour, a (mostly) true memoir, takes the reader along on Alex Lieberman’s hilarious journey as a nice Jewish Long Island girl navigating the (cough cough), “ins and outs” of the seedy sex-for-money trade in the south. If Joan Rivers had been an escort in her younger days, this would be her story. Part voyeuristic erotic fun, part Jewish whining, and part eye-opening exposé on the real world of escorting, Buy the Hour’s first person account reveals the inner working of “the hobby’s” subculture, and will have the reader laughing, gasping, crying, and, oddly enough, relating to its storyteller Kim and her alter ego “Alex,” a reluctant escort who finds having sex with strangers is sometimes the easiest part of the job."

Just my take, but I imagine there is more embellishment than one would like to believe. For some reason I don't think this book is like Dragnet "where just the names have been changed to protect the innocent."

I suspect that for many, the good outweighs the bad but for a few who start with multiple bad experiences, they don't last long. From the male perspective, my first 4 or 5 encounters were extremely forgettable, even disappointing to where I was literally down to "I'll give this one last chance". Then spent an amazing hour with a young lady since retired and that hooked me. Now my good experiences outweigh the bad by 10 to 1.

I also think it depends on the definition of good and bad. A provider who gets into the business believing that all the men are going to look like Tom Cruise is in for a lot of disappointment. 'Cause we don't. But while we may not have the looks, many of us are true gentlemen and appreciate the ladies.

My .02 and worth almost all of that...

The author is Jewish and a lot of Jewish guilt and angst shows up in the text. At times she seems like a fun person, but a number of times she comes across as both sad and shallow. But I suspect that many providers face the same ups and downs that she does and it makes me appreciate those who are good enough actresses that they can put that behind them when I step in the door.

It was definitely an interesting read.

I agree with you 100% all in perspective. I know there are bad experiences on both sides. Now I want to get this book however
