Default Iris scanning technology becoming more common...

Dubai has cut the airport wait time from 49 minutes to 22 SECONDS:

http://www.theverge.com/2013/5/2/427...-iris-scanners

Frankly, since privacy is already pretty much lost, I think we should deploy this on a wide scale in the US, especially for receiving government benefits - Medicare, SSN, welfare, etc. It can cut fraud to the bone.

Frankly, I would sign up to use it to get through airports. Key quote:

--------------------------------------------------------------
"If you find yourself flying into Dubai, you can see it in action. The city’s airport recently made the switch to an automated two-gate customs system, also made by AOptix. Scanning your passport opens the first gate; an iris print opens the second. Once the system is fully deployed, the company says it will bring wait times down from 49 minutes to 22 seconds. A private company called Clear is already trying this on an opt-in basis in the US. In exchange for a quick iris scan, their service will let you skip security in half a dozen American airports."
-----------------------------------------------------------------

If they had this at DFW, I would sign up. We already get that ultra-invasive full body scan and I have been patted down once already. An iris scan is hardly invasive compared to that.

And MEXICO of all countries is implementing it to cut fraud and provide poverty assistance. How ironic. I wonder if Mexico will object to the US using iris scans on people applying for unemployment, welfare and/or medical care. Heh.

Quote:
-------------------------------------------
"For countries with national ID programs, this Orwellian scenario is already starting to play out. In collaboration with MorphoTrust, India has already iris-printed 350 million of its citizens as part of its national ID program, and they're on track to scan all 1.2 billion. This year, Mexico will roll out the first iris-matched ID cards in the world as part of a $25 million program. In both cases, the ID will help stop fraud and provide poverty assistance, helping solve half a dozen urgent humanitarian issues at once. Despite these good intentions, this kind of mass identification has civil libertarians very worried."
------------------------------------------

Take it away, COG and SEE3772.

Why you coming down on SEE and COG?

The whole pre-vetted idea for frequent passengers was supposed to be implemented YEARS ago. Wasn't there a young presidential candidate who promised CHANGE? What happened to the young man? Or did the <5% cut of a raise of 2% cause the whole program to be shit-canned?

What happened to that National Medical Database as part of Obamacare?

Who hasn't had the image of Wesley Snipes getting around the Iris scanner in "Judge Dredd" since reading the thread title?

Some people expect so little from "Dear Leader."

What's wrong with the iris scanner? It's simply a method of identification. You're not giving up any information the airline isn't entitled to have. The airline has a vested interest in knowing who is getting on board the aircraft. Beats the hell out of naked scanning, scaring the shit out of little kids, and groping elderly nuns.

In fact, it might be a good thing to have at election centers. It would end the argument about photo id.

Now this technology, like any other technology has the potential to be abused. But in an airport situation, it seems like a good idea.

You people have me pegged all wrong. There are times when it is important to be able to prove you are who you say you are. There are even times when it is important for an employer, or even government, to know that you are who you say you are. However, this technology can, and no doubt, will be used to further the police state unless we place strict Constitutional restrictions on its use.

But in an airport? Sounds like it makes sense.
