"Our findings are dramatic. Our most conservative estimates show that by adopting shall-issue laws, states reduced murders by 8.5%, rapes by 5%, aggravated assaults by 7% and robbery by 3%. If those states that did not permit concealed handgun in 1992 had permitted them back then, citizens would have been spared approximately 1,570 murders, 4,177 rapes, 60,000 aggravated assaults and 12,000 robberies. To put it even more simply: Criminals, we found, respond rationally to deterrence threat."

"We also collected data on whether owners of concealed handguns are more likely to use them in committing violent crimes. The rarity of these incidents is reflected in Florida's statistics: More than 300,000 concealed-handgun licenses were issued between Oct. 1, 1987, and Dec. 31, 1995, but only five violent crimes involving permitted pistols were committed in this period, and none of these resulted in fatalities."

No where in any of my posts did I state that there should be more guns on the street or less guns on the street. I'll leave it up to you self-proclaimed "experts" to tell all of us what needs to be done. I was responding to EXTXOILMAN's comment/story about a single incident in the U.K. and his implying that the U.S. gun laws are superior to those in the U.K. I'm simply pointing out that homicides in the U.S. are ridiculously high when compared to those in the U.K. The U.S. is the greatest country in the world but has a major problem when it comes to homicides. No matter which side of the fence you stand, I would think you would agree with that.

Do you have a reading problem??? I gave you 2 different but similar definitions of HOMICIDE for you. Homicides do not include suicides or accidental shootings.

To clarify, SRXXX, my post was not about one incident in the U.K.. It was about the incremental lessoning of freedoms over the last 100 years in that country with more and more restrictive gun laws. Which is exactly what the progressives in this country want to do if allowed to.

We are not them, but we could be if not vigilant.

I don't disagree with you as to the root cause of the problem. The question is what can be done outside of your suggestion to reduce the problem? Unfortunately, very little IMHO.

So we have to look at other ways to lower the homicide rate. Put more guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens? Make some guns/assault weapons more difficult to get? Personally, I think any answer is like putting a bandaid on gaping wound.

speaking of reading your history, assault weapons were banned here in 96, when Romney was Gov he passed legislation in 04 banning assault weapons after the 96 legislation sunset ...
