The only parts of government in which I have any experience are in the much worshiped areas of "national security," and "defense," and "the law."
And everything I saw was that everyone cared only about their own careers, their image and reputation, keeping their bureaus funded with more money, just like the corrupt private corporations I was unlucky enough to have to work for from time to time.
The problem with the US national security establishment is that it's too freaking big and there's too much money and people's careers involved to expect anything but dishonesty. They will take any position if it leads to more money and a better career.
In particular MY GENERATION of "national security civilians" and military officers are particularly feckless given that we were the ones with all the ability to learn from the mistakes of past generations.
When I was in school, graduate school, all we did was study what went wrong in Vietnam, why this or that case study should inform us of this or that lesson....
With all that to inform us my generation got it wrong more than any other generation which preceded us.
And on an individual level the people in those places don't give a shit about the consequences to anyone of what they do.
