I think it's more like a horse race in the final stretch. One horse has lagged behind, but has stayed in contention. In the final sprint, the horse that has been slightly behind, pulls ahead, and begins to lengthen his lead.

According to "the very respectable Real Clear Politics" (Whirly's words, not mine), the final electoral map has never swung Romney's way. In fact, 294 to 244 is the closest it has been!
