You are absolutely right, CryptKicker didn't have to close the Thread.
He had the Option to issue points for an Ad Posting Violation and then remove it completely.
Instead he chose to leave it here after editing it.

What good is having the thread closed and visible? Why not issue points and leave it open, she came back after the rules changed, she could have been warned, edited and left open to post on...

If the Thread was closed, you could not have posted a Reply.
Points are issued for Violations of the Guidelines.
Eccie no longer permits Ads.
If the Post had been pointed as an Ad it would be removed.
Instead it was edited & remains open - just as you suggested above.
