Wink Upstate New York - What's it all about?

Hello Ladies & Gents of NY!

I am a touring provider from the Pacific Northwest and have just been DYING to come and visit the East Coast. I have never visited the East Coast at all but have heard lovely things about it, Upstate New York coming highly recommended.

I like to just get a feel for the scene and the people before deciding to make arrangements, so decided to post here and see what you all can tell me about it. Best cities to visit? What's the weather like? Places to avoid? Cool things to see while I am there? Other places to advertise for the area? I am sure you get the drift

Looking forward to hearing more about your area

Lux

Hope you come to Buffalo.

BTW. I think you might have some glue on your lips.

Luxurie - You should definitely start with Buffalo, probably the best airport of the Upstate airports to fly in and out of plus the majesty of Niagara Falls 20 minutes away. Then a nice trip up the Interstate 90 to Rochester and Syracuse, but Buffalo is a must!

The west to East Thruway run might be fun. Buffalo to Rochester to Syracuse To Albany get you hitting the bigs. You could throw Binghamton in there, possible Ithaca and depending upon when you come the seasons are spectacular.

The wine trails are magnificent, there are breathtaking lakes and even tiny little mountains in the Adirondaks and the Catskills.

You could go to Old Forge, Lake Placid, and of course if you came in the Fall you could catch wonderful sports at both the professional (OK my mistake The Bills have some continuing growing pains although the Jets have their training Camp at SUNY Cortland) and collegiate sports can be fun as well U of B, U of R, RIT, Syracuse, Cornell, Cortland, and even Ithaca College just to name a few,

Then of course if you were serious you could always dip down into NYC

Best wishes!

To jump on and extend Perry and LB's comments, it depends on how much balance you put in between coming for work and play and also on what type of play you like. Until October there are some similarities between the Pacific Northwest and Upstate NY (and of couse major dissimilarities). If you are an outdoor girl, the trees are tall, full and green. I love Letchworth State Park (http://www.nysparks.com/parks/79/details.aspx). It's between Buffalo and Rochester so it could make for a nice respite. Since I'm not a boating guy, I can't tell you how to get the most out of water experience of the Great Lakes or Finger Lakes.

It looks like you enjoy white wine. The growing environment for white grapes is excellent in this area. As a result, the many scores of wineries around the Finger Lakes offer some of the very best white wines in the country and many offer great views. My favorite place to go is Belhurst Castle (http://www.belhurst.com/). Belhurst sits between Rochester and Syracuse making it another contender for a respite between major hobby cities.

Rochester offers a lot in the way of live performances. There tend to be a lot of concerts. It seems like CMAC in Candidagua (southeast of Rochester ~20 miles) has had a great line up of bands but when I just now looked, it's not as busy as I imagined (http://www.cmacevents.com/Calendar.aspx).

I can't tell you much else about night life in the area other than my perception that the Canadian side of Niagara Falls appears to have a lot of activity and casinos are a big part of it. Bring your passport.

Safe travels.

Agree with Chloe on Albany and if you have any questions on Syracuse, Im based here. Stay in hotels burb side, better parking.

Easy, quick, cheap trains between Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse in case you dont drive/rent a car.

Some good gents that need love in the Ithaca area. Just no train going there.

And yes Buffalo should be cheaper to fly into. I paid out the butt to fly out of Syracuse..
