I know that some may sign up because of duty or honor but how many folks do you know that quit a million dollar a year job to join the military? I know of one who did. Have you seen the Pat Tillman story? If so congrats on honoring such a man, if not I would highly recommend seeing it. A true story on what being a true patriotic person and family is. It is not so black and white such as some warriors like to claim. Most who do all of this chest pounding haven't even seen combat.

Have you seen the movie MA? I saw it twice. The second time it was just me and my girlfriend. No veterans bothered to show up. There were only three other beside me the first time I saw it. I would bet that not a poster one that leans right has seen it. My guess is Mazo and some other so called lefties have.

Actually I know someone who walked away from a lot more than 1m dollar job to join the special forces. For Some people it is just a job, for others it is true calling.

Of course now, that he is retired and back in good ole USA he is asking himself why did he risk his life for 20 years. Answer seems to be "to save lives and freedom of people who are completely self centered and hell bent on instant gratification without any sense of personal responsibility".

You obviously have not seen the Pat Tillman movie. I highly recommend. That guy pulled no punches. It is documented that he was making over a million bucks a year.

no, but I just can't explain how they desensitize and educate you to the point where you're probably afraid but you feel you can make it through.....you're trained to feel like you can make it through

Apparently the new justification is we need to torture "because we might get a piece of information that, combined with 8 additional years of investigative work, might lead us to someone who is hiding out".

Flailing away for a rationale is indicative of not really believing anything you say....you're just going with the currently convenient argument.

I do find it ironic that one of the pieces of evidence seems to be that the people being waterboarded actually lied about the courier. I will give the masochists among us credit for being able to turn the fact that waterboarding gave us bad information into their favor as an argument for waterboarding. If that's not brilliant, i don't know what is.

I say this with the most sincere appreciation for our service men & women....

...and I'd sure some enlist out of a sense of duty and some because it is the "family business" so to speak...

...and this is probably the wrong week to say this...

....but for most I'll suggest for most it is a J-O-B

I'll share that I had a high school graduating class of ~200. About half a dozen or so enlisted...not a single one was in the top half of our class. This was around Desert Storm I so if ever morale for the troops was high it was then.

In the last year I've met several twentysomethings that were in deadend jobs and decided to enlist....if you asked them off the record they'd share the same thing: it had nothing to do with serving the country but getting some stability, whatever incentives the service was offering and...get this...military healthcare and benefits.

I meet a lot of former military folks and coming out they look pretty sharp, make great employees or co-workers, etc. and will talk about "service" and use the rest of the buzzwords and I really think it is genuine, but going in all I see are people looking for jobs becuase the service is the best option they have.

As my sig line says, meant with no disrespect....just sharing the lens I see things through based on my personal experiences...
