Bullshit. We'd have payed the missed tax and interest. We'd have also petitioned to get out of the penalty claiming inadvertence and citing where we'd reported the same income in other years, expected to loose, and then paid the penalty.

Didn't former Ways and Means Chairman Rostenkowski go to prison for some stuff that pales in comparison to Rangel's transgressions? Had nothing to do with tax evasion. As I recall it was felony fraud against the post office by intentionally violating his franking privilege. This was categorically a crime.

I guess it all depends on whether an ambitious federal prosecutor decides one day that he wants to nail a scalp to the wall.

I just picked a politician, the other is a commentator. If the politicians weren't so public, they wouldn't be such easy targets.
