It was the security guys at the store and they were very good-natured. They sat with me and gave me a pen and pad of paper so I could start retracing the stores and such that I may have been at earlier that week. The cops showed up and and took a report and kept the notes that traced my consumer steps. they were quite doubtful there would be any chance of recovery. They said the Treasury department collects these reports from stores, banks, and local law enforcement and analyzes them to see if they can find a pattern and figure out if there is a ring. Everyone was so nonchalant about it as they wrote their report, it led me to believe this actually happens quite a bit. I was very cooperative, mostly because I was actually innocent of any wrongdoing, so I even complied to a search. They checked the other currency to see if there were more fakes. I imagine they may have been more intense if they had found more.
One thing I do remember that they said that was kind of interesting is that counterfeit rings actually do smaller bills these days because hardly anyone checks $1.00 to $20.00. Apparently a lot more of what we have in and out of our pocket in a given day is more fake than we would believe. Usually it is only noticed by banks and stores with a loss prevention staff.

The Secret Service is in charge of counterfeit enforcement.
Some time ago I saw a show that detailed the longest series of counterfeit bills in the US. I believe it was over a 20-30 year period, and the bills only crept up occasionally, mostly in the Summer. The counterfeiter was passing fake $1 bills.
When they finally found the guy (in the Midwest, I think), it turns out he used the bills primarily to fund kids' trips to the local "free fairs" or carnivals that came to town in the Summer time.

You can trust the marker if you want, but you will get burned eventually. Most fakes now are bleached out 5's with 100's printed on them. So it's the right paper, the pen doesn't know what denomination you are checking, just checks the type of paper. Check the watermark to the right side of the bill on the front, make sure the face on the bill and the face in the watermark are the same face.

Nicest reply thus far. And I'm not suprised it came from you. I hear you're a lovely man.
To me, this is like opening a door or selecting the wine at dinner. Something that if a man can do with a stroke of generousity and compassion, he ought to.
In the same way that women are able to comfort and slow you down. Or excite you and remind you of your virility, most men want to leave a woman feeling protected. Its in the genes at a very base level. To pay her the money she expected and agreed to would be a kindness that is in line with those more traditional values.
Besides, while it was an accident, you haven't actually paid her her actual rate - and which of you do you think truly needs it more? Probably the one who exposed her body to a stranger for the aforementioned price.

I'm also probably on at least one DNS list in Dallas.

Yeah? Doubtful. If I even had one of those lists I'm sure you would'nt be on it.

Yeah, I can assure you I look nothing like JD. Easily twice his age, short, fat, balding, and hung like a newborn miniature frog's pinkie (but not green).
I figured a lot of ladies might be attracted to JD, and unabashedly adopted his avatar as a ruse.
However, if you use your super imagination, you can see JD in me. If you do, would you waive a fee for JD????

Charge it to the game...
What are the things to look for? Is there still a strip on the edge. I remember when they added that. I couldn't find the damn strips back then. Now they changed the money so much, I think the new money looks weird.
So, the pen detects the unique paper used in US money.
What else to look for?

You can still look for the red and blue fibers in US paper.

I don't think it's your fault but I still feel that you should split the difference with her and figure out who gave YOU the counterfeit bill.

Again, that's not splitting the difference. He had to get the counterfeit bill which cost him $100 in real money. Now you want him to chip in an additional $50. That's just upping his donation $50. Not a part of the original bargain.

Look at some real bills. Do a little Googling. There are quite a few sites with info on spotting counterfeit bills.
It's hard to duplicate the feel of a real bill, however, there are people bleaching $1 bills and reprinting them as higher denominations. It's also really hard to duplicate the feel and look of the intaglio printing. Real bills are crisp and have a 3D effect. The paper is actually raised where there is printing on the front of the bill. The look of the portrait and background thereof is hard to duplicate well. All of these things are easy to check quickly and then decide whether to check further.
A quick check just for the feel and looks of the bill will give you some clue. Then take the time to look for the security features. There's a strip embedded in $5 and up. There's a watermark on the paper that shows up when light shines through the bill, but not when light shines on the bill. Certain parts of the bill are printed with color change ink that changes when you change the angle you look at it. Look at these features on real bills and figure out what they look like.
They say most counterfeits won't pass even a cursory test if you take the trouble to look at it and look for the right feel and quality printing.
There are some little ultraviolet LED lights you can get that will cause certain parts of the bill to glow in certain colors. I've even seen them advertised as a combination counterfeit pen/UV light, but haven't held one in my hands.
The counterfeit detector pens usually detect starch. A legitimate bill may show up as fake if it's gone through the clothes washer. Counterfeiters are getting smarter about processing their bills to make them pass the counterfeit pen tests. They coat the bill with something or somehow treat the bill.
There are some good counterfeit bills out there. They say the North Korean government has set up a counterfeit bill operation that makes "supernotes" that are printed on the proper kind of cotton paper and use intaglio printing and they're hard to detect. Luckily, most counterfeits are not of the quality of supernotes.
