<------ huge fan of smokehouse's prime beef rib plate, 2 chunks of beef rib thats bigger than a bloated twinkie on steroids.

Never been less than perfect each time I get it. (Even the next day reheated, still killer.)

My favorite is Quicks, they have the best variety plate. Also a big fan of Bryants, gates & haywards, though haywards has slipped a lot over the last few years.

Best ribs in KC are OK Joes, best brisket is LC's, but they have had numerous health code violations

Hands down they have the best sides and some really good, high-end stuff like their BBQ Prime Rib at $35 a plate.

If you want authentic KC 'cue, then you need to hit up Bryant's, Gate's or LC's. Bryant's sauce is the closest thing we have to Texas flavor. They give you a lot of meat, and it's usually good. But JR's right, it's a dump! LC's is sweeter and has good meat, but it's an even filthier dive.

You might want to try Smokin' Guns, Woodyard or Rosedale. You can never go wrong there. Quick's is definitely good. If you're out south, Snead's is pretty tasty. If you're out east, Plowboys is good, too.

If you're looking for a good time, you should check out BB's Lawnside at 85th and Prospect. The food is good and they have live music. It's one of the funnest places in KC.

Agree on everything. I forgot to mention Woodyard, great place. A lot of people like Bryant's sauce, it is just too sweet for me. When I eat at Bryant's I ask for no sauce.

But, I am different; I just do not like anything with too much sugar in it.

Bar-B-Q is all about the FOOD!

AHHHHH...The Great KC BBQ debate... always lively.

Basically, you need to try all of them you can, as often as you can get here, and then enter the debate armed with your story... which may be about the food... or the place... but will always return to the food.

KC BBQ has variations... KC suburban, KC black BBQ/downtown and all sorts of tweeners...

BTW, if you like BBQ.. hit a competition, time your visit and get a good date to show you a good time

I like Bryants, the original downtown.. .ok its a dive, but the pit is old and you get a bit of that flavor from forever like you should. I like the sauce, but its different, not molasses based. Gates has better sauce and ribs, Bryants has better ends and brisket... LCs is awesome if you survive it

OK Joe's is my girlfriends favorite but she's from Johnson County...Im a Wyandotte county boy... I love rosedale... etc. I'm not a fan of suburban like Zarda and the old KC masterpiece, but it all has its place.

Ok... back to lurking :P

Right on Jack,

I love them all, some better than others. Just why do I keep going back to some and not the others?

Bryant's may be a dive, but it is intended to be a pit. Boy do they pile on the meat. A lunch sandwich is more than I can usually eat.

A friend hit the nail on the head. He refers to Gates as the McDonalds of BBQ.

Bryant's has the best turkey in town when they do it right. Their sauce is different and is nice for a change of pace.

LC's has the best sausage in town. He makes it himself. The brisket is good if it is not to fatty. If they fry them long enough, great fries. If you can not handle a dirty place skip it though.

Woodyard sells wood to most of the BBQ places in town. He decide to open his own place. It is still good, but it was best the first year or so he was open.

Oklahoma Joe's has maybe the best fries in town. Very unique beans as they are the only one with lima beans in the beans. Most people either love or hate the beans. I am the rare in between. Not my favorite but nice for a change. Never got a meat there that was not good.

Jackstack and Smokehouse are good. Fancier dining with cloth napkins. Normally very consistent. Not the best, but good and consistent. Jackstack is an upscale Smokehouse. The guy who owns Jackstack started Smokehouse and sold the business. There was a five year non-compete which was fine, because he was tired of BBQ. After 5 years he missed it, so he start Jackstack.

Danny Edward is good. Beans and slaw are great. Meat is always good. I do not like the "new" (been using it a while) spice on the fries.

Rosedale some people love it, but I have never been impressed.

Winslow's is okay, but was better a few years ago. The nice thing about the City Market in all the places to eat. One person in your group can get Thai another a burrito yet another a sandwich at the Italian Deli and finally you can get BBQ. This is only some of the places to eat.

Summit Hickory Pit BBQ is pretty good if you are out east. It is off of 50 Hiway in Lee's Summit. It is good.

Smokebox up by the airport. Only been in it once, but I was very impressed. I need to get up there again.

Smokin' Gun was outstanding until they moved into the new building. The broccoli casserole and potato casserole are good and unique for a BBQ place. Beans are still great. The meat is not as good as it use to be.

KC Smoke Stack is just south of Smokin' Guns. I prefer it over Smokin' Guns now. One neat thing is FREE BEER on Monday. Mac and cheese is unique. A little spicy buy good. Meat is good. I think the best bargain in KC right now. Less than $10 for a sandwich, 2 sides and a drink. One of my favorites right now.

Zarda's is pretty good. A little to spicy for some. Get the mac and cheese instead of fries. Beans are a little spicy but very good and sold in almost any grocery store in town. Meat is good, but there is better.

Try them all. Everybody has their favorite and everyone has the place they do not like. Everyone has a story or two to tell. They use to have a dog behind the counter at Bryant's in the old days when Arthur was alive. Sometimes they would pet the dog between sandwiches. Another guy told me LC was making his sandwich, picked his nose and went back to making the guy's sandwich. Last I heard that guy has not been back. I go back for the sausage.

Bryant's is awesome, and they have several different sauces. The original is the one that can be a little too much for some people. It is very heavy on the curry. I love the rich and spicy.

Agree with most everything you said here. One thing though...the joint a couple blocks south of Smokin Guns is called KC Smoke Shack, not Smoke Stack. 900 Swift but they are only open for lunch Monday thru Friday.

I've been eating bbq for almost 40 years, been a certified KCBS Judge for 10. KC Smoke Shack is consistently the best bbq I've ever had.

Ok, so back to the OP who started this but is now long gone, where did you go? The GREAT thing about this city is the sheer number of great places to visit and get some good 'Cue. Everyone has their favorite place. It's probably a better question to ask what places suck as that would be a much shorter list!

And Famous Daves? Come on man... You are in the BBQ capital of the world and you throw some chain out there? SMDH. You might as well say 'Yeah, that McRib kicks ass!!'

But, you forgot to mention those Applebee's ribs!?!?!?!?

Yeah, at this point, it would be interesting to hear which rib place she actually went to, and how she liked it... Lexi?

It's amazing how the barbecue threads bring out so many replies! For what it's worth, my choices:

Rosedales
Smokestack
Haywoods
Oklahoma Joes

You can't go wrong with any of those.

And weirdly, the ribs at Hereford House are awesome!

Oklahoma Joes and Jacks Stack. Nothing like you get back home. They are the best and I would be honored to take ya to either one of them.
